Ring recovery yesterday, and advise on shipping it back to owner...

Don't known if you already shipped, but make sure you over-night it to them. Less time spent in the mail, better chance it makes it to them. My girlfriend is a jeweler and in the industry everything is over-night shipped.

I make jewelry and send it by mail to one of the shops that sells my stuff. I send it USPS Overnight, and it can be insured for the four grand. Cost about forty bucks or so, the owner shouldn't have a problem with that.

I wouldn't ship without nullx2 plus shipping sent to you in a postal mo.

ie if the ring is 5 grams, multiply by 2 and add up scrap value and ask for that. And the diamond, probably another cnote [unless its huge its not worth much]. I would not just mail it back to them for nothing, as they have probably got a new one on the way via insurance.

That ring is totally new. And expensive. And was not sold without an insurance tacked onto it. Maybe I am wrong.

Not trying to be a dbag to the owners, but if you let them decide...chances are you will get a 20 dollar bill. I got 5 bucks this summer. In retrospect...after they talked about a trip to mehico...I should have broke the guys chops.

As for shipping. USPS. Get 5000 insurance. And add that to what they should already pay you, and ship it [thats gonna cost a lot] I am just going on what you were saying it was worth.

Lastly. No snail mail. Overnight, morning delivery.

Yesterday I answered a "lost your stuff" post and recovered the ring. Nice $4K ,14K white gold band with a sizable diamond. Owners are extremely happy it was recovered, problem is they had to go back to Mich. before I found it. It has to be sent to them. I'm leaving it up to them to decide how and how much insurance. Question is: What is the best way to ship it? I know FEDEX will only insure jewelry up to 1K, not sure about the others. Any one have experience shipping jewelry?

very NICE Chris,,,,,you are good man on returning it,,,,,may karma come your way friend,,,I would have them send you a shipping label so that it is all on them if something happens in the shipping process,,,,,when someone goes through the trouble to find someone to help them find their ring, you know it means a lot to them,,,great work,,,,GL HH

I have read some of the comments on here and frankly they upset me. I don't care IF I get a reward OR any extra BUT I refuse to be out any more money for finding something than I already am. Holding it hostage for some monatary token of gratitude is the WRONG way to go about anything. That is ALMOST parallel to extorsion.

IF someone gives me a reward so be it. As long as I have money for shipping is ALL I ask.

Us water hunters find many many things that can never be returned. Giving back what we can is what I believe the admirable thing to do.

The OP was probably told where the ring was and he might have met the people on the beach. He sounds VERY honest and wants to do the right thing and people are telling him formulas and other ways to make their loss into a money grabbing idea for him.

You all follow your heart and do what you feel is best in any situation YOU have but PLEASE don't think your money grabbing ideas are right for us folks that believe in helping others and being ambassadors to our wonderful hobby.

its a lost cause insuring it. I have had $3500 worth of gold be stolen out of the mail that was insured. After 3 months of lawyer fees, and battling the post office it came down to a "packing error" on my part with was TOTAL BULL. I hate all of the shipping services but if it was me I would put it into a ball of aluminum foil, inside a ziplock bag, and in a 6x6 box taped up well. Ship it priority usps. That way if it is x-rayed nobody will see the ring, and if you ship OVERNIGHT and insure it for a lot then it draws the attention to any thieves.

Very well said! I agree totally. At least there are a few of us with the right attitude.
