Quick evening hunt

Had a little time this evening and the weather was nice so I walked back in the woods to a old home site. I’ve found a few things here the last few times I’ve been there. It’s very over grown field and it’s hard to swing there. I found some good things. I also found some ticks or should I say they found me.

When I found it. I thought it’s in such good shape it must be newer than the civil war. But after getting home and cleaning the back. I looked it up and it’s is civil war age. From what I found it was made from the 1850s to 1865. There was a good bit of civil war activity around here. I find a button or two at a lot of old home sites. I have a theory because I’m not far from Gettysburg. That after the war there where a lot of warm wool coats around. I think the old farmers wore them to work on the farm. And that’s why I find so many buttons on out of the way home sites.

Hery cool old button. I do like your theory too. May not be the site of a battle or encampment but could very well come from someone wearing an old used CW coat. Well done.

When the troops come thru they raided the farms on the way of food supplies. So they where on a lot of farms. But some of the places I find buttons are in the middle of no where.

Nice finds. Cool button. Yeah - those buttons can be found anywhere. I found a 1870's (dates from backmark) one out here in Montana at old mine site. Many veterans used their military coats as it kept them warm. Same reason I find many WWI and WWI items at yards. My dad has old military coat that he got at surplus store so never know where buttons come from.
