I have one, but it has a t-handle, very uncomfortable. Not worth a crap for digging. So short,, just wondered what you all use ? I rarely use mine. I appreciate all opinions , and thanks ahead of time. :?::?::yes::chaplin:

When I use one, I really like my 28" Root Slayer. A longer one would make prying up hard dirt a bit easier, but being so small, I can wear it on my side and it doesn't look so menacing to onlookers.

Thanks for all your opinions, since I hunt mostly woods, have tree roots everywhere ! :chaplin: :chaplin:hoser, I do remember the one you made now, you are so handy !!!!

Predator tools as well for me. I run a spike, just so I can backpack it easy. But they're blades are sharp and strong.

I own the original radius root slayer with the round handle and the root slayer nomad, been using the nomad mostly cause it's lighter weight. I hunt the woods like you, lots of roots and when the shovels are new they are great. BUT I have to deal with rocks and over time the side get rounded off and they don't slice through the roots at all. The V part is easy to sharpen with a file but the sides are difficult and time consuming to sharpen them.

When I've finally worn out the nomad I'm going to look into a shovel with larger teeth so I can sharpen them easier.

in the photo is what I use to treat a dull spatula... Time is about 2 minutes and that’s it. I hold a shovel in my left hand, I hold a turbine in my right hand and make an acute angle at a very sharp angle... 2 minutes and the shovel is very sharp...

My first shovel was a Lil'Digger.
Good shovel. Lightweight.
Then I bought a Lesche Ground Shark.
Better shovel but just too heavy to tote around.

I do the same thing, especially if I'm hunting in an area with lots of roots.

Many opinions, and different shovels work for different people very dependent on conditions and depth wanted. I hunt deep old coins, nothing else. The Predator Barracuda is my tool of choice, will go through anything besides highly frozen ground, concrete and roots bigger than 1-1.5 inches. Incredible strength and durability. On the expensive end.

Thank all for your replies. :digginahole: I would like a shovel that is fairly light and a little longer than the very short ones.

I have the Predator D-Handle Raven (with the footpads). I like it because it's semi-circular so it makes good plugs, and the serrations make short work of small to medium sized roots. It's 3 feet tall, so it's just the right size to lug along, but it's too big to hook onto your belt or anything like that.

I currently use a Predator Model 56 Spartan. Its the same shovel as the model 55 Barracuda, except for it's a D handle. I used T handles for years, but after trying a D handle I'll never go back. Much more comfortable.
