People complaining about my digger

I know, us Californian are screwing up everything. There isn’t a state more beautiful than California btw. So sorry but we can debate states in another thread.

Exactly Tom. Make clean plugs and you don’t have a problems. Take your trash and throw it away. Not breaking any laws so that’s what I meant by not caring and enables me to detecting in peace other than looking over my shoulders in some places.

unfortunately, you have to "look over your shoulder" just about everywhere today, but not "so much" because of your digging technique, but because of the possibility of being "jumped" by some neanderthal hell bent on depriving you of your property, and (maybe your life) probably especially in cali, but it can happen anywhere!..really! ..just sayin'

I agree. (Not that you care )

Maybe the attitudes about metal detecting are different in Utah, but I have no problem carrying a lesche style shovel anywhere I metal detect. My plugs are clean.

me too! have nothing to hide, besides,i can talk a snake back into it's hole,
so why worry?

just gonna say it... shovels are for old people... if your young, cut that plug with a hand trowel such as the lesche... been doing this for almost 20 years... I don't carry a shovel, or a "lesche like shovel". it would actually slow me down... and i have have found ALOT over the years. a few that have hunted with me can't beleive how many times I get up and down compared to them... get it and move on...

when ya knees give out, you'll be lookin for that "sampson" and it won't mean "!!!!" if ya old, or young! I'm just sayin'

TRUTH! when I posted that reply it was meant as a "sarcastic" comeback to a few of the other replies... I am that old guy;) and stuff is falling apart... It's hard to convey sarcasm sometimes... HappyHunting!

I pop big-ass plugs in soccer fields or anywhere with my shovel but make damn sure it is undetectable afterwards. I mean totally not a trace. I've become very good at it. If questioned about it I will ask if any evidence can be found of me disturbing anything.
I have blackland clay to deal with here in North Texas, hand diggers can be a pain to use in that stuff. The shovel is the only real answer.

Oh so true. I agree and try to look around each time I bend down to dig a plug. Gotta be safe.

Also for uncontrolled , unleashed , untrained pups owned by idiots . Twice
I have had the same big , friendly 40 lb. plus Dog run into me at full gallop wanting to play . Luckily , I'm not too frail for my age and haven't been injured . I have had to hold the Dog until His owners come and get him and put him on leash because he ignores them .Not even an apology or a thank you , complete silence. These people are a couple of buttholes , no wonder the dog want's to play with other people .

in my view, this is also correct! after 35 years in the hobby, it doesn't matter the 'tool",I am always cognizant of the cleanliness of a hunted site.i too, use a 31" t handled "sampson" shovel, and love it for it's ability to cut a nice even deep plug,
making retrieval simple, and above all, neat! saves my knees and back, what's NOT to like?..

Hey, however it happened, if I was a detectorist in Baltimore you can be sure I'd be carrying around a copy of that document while detecting

if you was a detectorist in Baltimore, you would be sure to be carrying around "somethin' heavier than a copy of a document!"..I'm just sayin'

Good for you that you don't blame the dog for the owner's lack of proper training. That dog likely assumes if you're down on the ground it means you're ready to play !

.....can't say how it is there now, but we moved from Baltimore about 15 years ago, and like many places it can vary from locality to locality as to how safe or unsafe it might be, Baltimore county was likely more safe than Baltimore city but Baltimore county would obviously likely have more areas to detect anyhow. That all being said, I never got into detecting until some years after we moved from Baltimore so can't speak from personal experience about detecting there.

I'm anti-shovel unless you're using it in some cornfield or woods on a privately owned site you have permission to hunt. Shovels give off a bad image and camo gear isn't too far behind either.

"in general" wearing camouflage gear is NOT the smart play! wearing camouflage gear in a public area would make me nervous,AND attract attention, something you really do NOT want to do.also, wearing camouflage gear in a public place could possibly make people, again,in general, believe that person may have ''something going on upstairs!" i WILL concede that it has a tendency for making people want to AVOID that person, and that in, and of itself, is not a bad thing (so to speak) in a "public area"

Wearing camouflage gear in a public area might not only make people nervous, it would look somewhat silly too

Agreed! Going detecting in a public place while decked out like John Rambo would be pretty high up on the list of bad detecting ideas.

As camo gear goes, the metal detector manufacturers are partly to blame because many of their ads and videos show people all decked out in camo gear.

Here's a quiz for you guys that worry that "camo" attracts immediate scrutiny : Ask yourself the last time you were ever driving down the street, or walking through a store or park, and saw someone in camo colors. Ok, did you have an immediate disdain ? Or suspect him of "wrong-doing" ?

No, I'll bet you never even noticed nor gave 2 sh#ts about someone wearing camo. colors. So too do I doubt that anyone walks and drives around, studying pedestrians, to notice that someone's wearing camo, and then jump to: "he must be up to no good".

[Unless .... of course.... he's utterly silly like in GKL's picture ]

Good point, it would depend on the extent of the camo, if you looked like you were fully decked out like Rambo then maybe  if someone had on a casual camo colored T-shirt and army green pants you likely wouldn't think twice about them.

A yellow street employee vest though, plus a cap like mine...with a lightening bolt...does slow down look-ie peeps.

I actually found a 5 sided star badge once, and pinned it on, and a passer byer asked if the run down property was going to be condemned or what. CONDEMED. Nobody bothered me again.

ordinarily, it would not be a concern "agreed", however it is understood that we are referring to people DETECTING in a public area, ie: (park very visible well used) while wearing camouflage. while not stated as such it was thought to be understood that that's what was being discussed! apologies for the confusion!

Wearing camo detecting is a little odd, though. What's the point? Trying to sneak up on the coins and relics? Lol!

Just be sure to skip the camo face paint, though. That would definitely scare the people at your local park!
