Detecting in the woods today at a spot with an early 1800's historical cemetery nearby. Not many signals, but I did find four oxen shoes. Good sign that there was someone in the area in the 1800's, so I don't mind digging them. Got a high 50's signal and had to dig down six inches to unearth it. Pulled out a really ornate suspender clip! It's about 1 1/2" wide and made out of thin stamped brass. Probably from the late 1800's, but maybe even older than that. Only good find of the day, but a nice relic.
Side note to this story is the fact that I found a second cemetery that's not fenced in like the other one. Saw a few marked graves from the 1820's, but there were at least 25 graves that only had a flat rock sticking up out of the ground. I'm assuming they're grave markers, but not sure. Could it be a slave burial ground? Sad to see all those graves with no ID on them. Even worse is the fact that it hasn't been maintained or even documented (as far as I can tell). Reminds me of what my mother said to me when she was dying. "I'm not afraid of dying, but I am afraid of being forgotten." She'll never be forgotten as long as I live, but these poor souls have obviously been forgotten in time...
