We hunted an old farm home site yesterday in Sumter County FL and found among other items this thin sheet of copper of brass. It was nearly 12-IN deep, folded in half, and seems like it was in a small garbage dump

I am not sure if was used as an actual company sign or if it was a stencil for making signs. Internet searches for "JP Wilson" have not provided any clues.

Thanks for looking and please let me know if you have any ideas on this item.

Yea, could be an old business (Doctor/Dentist) shingle or a mailbox plate. The hole in the corner makes me think it could have been on a ring with other similar plates such as an old freight company might use for marking boxes for shipment.

Hello DD - Thanks for the reply. I think you have it right regarding the freight comment.

I could not figure out why there is only a hole in one corner. It is about the thickness of a paper back book cover so it was likely a shipping template of some kind.

Good luck out there. C9

It is definatly a stencil...alot of the early stencils had only one hole in the upper corner...not sure why...

Hello Apollyon - Found the stecil pic. I bet the hole in one corner was to hang it on a nail or many stencils were put on a ring as Dirt Dobber suggested.

I just wish I could figure out the "J. P. Wilson" part of the puzzle.

Thanks fo the reply. C9

Hello to you... Have you tried public records in the county where you found the sign... Any small or large business should be listed... Let us know... Good luck...
