My thoughts on the XP Deus 2 after 50 hours.

2500 miles away from my Deus2. Living vicariously through those who can update right now.
But in Black Sand and Salt the Deus 2 is very choppy for me on targets of depth. .
Ah, gotcha. What I was describing is more related to the update. Just seems like something has changed with the new Audio Filter feature that doesn't allow me to get the sound exactly like I had it before.

I'm not sure someone else will let me update one of their detectors so we can try all three versions? Been trying to save clams for a Manticore or Equinox 900. I need to get a job at McDonalds me thinks! Lol!
If they keep releasing new detectors, I may need you to get me a 2nd job there working with you.

Updated to version 1.0 a couple of days ago and tried it out for about an hour yesterday. I had it set up in General capped at 14kHz, Full Tones, default disc with no notch. Volume turned down on unwanted target ranges. Regular Square audio with the new Audio Filter set at 2.

First impressions: I still don't like Full Tones. To me, running FT in any program other than Sensitive FT or Fast just sounds muddy to my ears. Especially on the lower weighted programs. For me and the type of hunting I do, Pitch is where it's at. It's just a lot cleaner IMHO.

Another thing I noticed is that no matter where I set the Audio Filter, I can't seem to get the same zippy sound on deep targets and snappy sound on shallow ones. Maybe this is all in my head but it seems like it's all or nothing now. With a setting of 0-2, the audio tone just seems more clipped than what it was on 0.71. On a higher setting, it sounds zippy even on shallow targets. Again, maybe this is all in my head. I've only spent an hour using it, so I need to put more time on it.

I like having the ability to cap the max frequency on programs. I can see where this will be useful in certain situations. The Offset FT feature should also be useful for those who like running full tones wide open. Should help make those low conductors jump out at you more, instead of blending with the iron.

Spent a few minutes using High Square audio. No opinion on that yet.
And see I think one of the best upgrades to v1.0 is the audio.

I've always disliked the zippy tone. I understand it makes distinguishing a tone easier because it takes the same response and spreads the tone out. If you listen, the same tonal difference is there in a square tone, you've got to pay attention to the start and finish of each tone, not just the overall sound. But then I grew up with the simple beep detectors.

The audio filter really helps smooth out the inconsistency of the old tones. Granted, it does tend to hide/muffle the very deep tones, but I don't spend as much time looking at the screen. I listen for that smooth deep sound with the right pitch, then I look and see what the display is saying. I now use the T.ID F=(FE) NF=(CO) like on the E-Trac. With a wider segment spread at the lower end, then it could be the key to telling that deep iron from the deep coins.

I know we all have our own preferences. I do like what the new audio upgrades offer as far as adjustability, but I feel like something is missing with the depth nuance in pitch tones compared to version .71. Their was a certain "snappy" sound on shallow targets and a "zippy" sound on deep ones. I can still adjust the Audio Filter to get the zippy sound, but when I do that, I don't get the same snappy sound on shallow targets. Everything becomes "zippy". If I LOWER the audio filter, I get more of a clipped sound than the snappy yet full sound that I'm used to. Hopefully I'm describing this in a way that makes sense.

This may seem like a very minor thing to most. Some people may not even notice it at all. However, I'm very much in tune with the Deus 2 audio, so even minor differences are noticeable to me. Like I said, I need to spend more time with it but from what I've seen so far, something is definitely different with the way it processes the audio and spits it out the speaker now.

Another thing I noticed but forgot to mention: It appears that the way TID is normalized has changed a bit in version 1.0. You may notice that nickels read a digit or two lower than before in certain programs, while quarters and dimes read a little lower than before in others. Might need to tweak your notches a bit with this update.

For anyone having trouble with iron sounding a little sweeter than usual, or if you’re digging more iron than usual, here’s 3 things to try:
1) Set the audio filter back to 0. While it can make good targets sound sweeter, it can also make iron sound sweeter. Setting it to 0 puts it back like it was in version .71.
2) Remember that the silencer setting has been revamped. A setting of 2 on the new version is about the same as 1 on the old version. If you ran it at 2 on the old version, try bumping it up to 3 on v. 1.0.
3) The iron volume setting has also been revamped. If you liked running your iron volume at 5 on version .71, you may need to bump it up to about 8 in v. 1.0. Being able to hear the iron grunts is very useful for helping distinguish between deep falsing iron and a good target.

Having lots of new features and audio options is nice, but trying to use them all at once may cause your machine to sound and perform in a way that’s very foreign to you. I’d suggest setting up your custom programs like you had them before, then slowly easing into trying out new features.

Some minor adjustments to notching are needed in most programs though, as mentioned above.

I was out in the yard today playing with those adjustments DeWayne, I think I might have it where I like it better. Now, tomorrow I will go out with .71 on the remote with 11” coil and v1.0 on the WS6 and 9” coil with the big phones. I need v1.0 to not only SOUND correct to me and NOT do such a good job of falsing on iron, but to actually find coins at the rate I’ve been finding them before the update. If it isn’t AT LEAST as capable in v1.0, there’s no point in running it IMO. But I have to spend a lot more time with it, I’m hoping to see the light sooner than later…but I have to operate within my own skill set, not according to how someone else is doing it. Paystreak might have some tips for ya…😃

Same here Kevin. I spent some time with mine again today and now have my audio adjusted how I like it, but haven’t really found anything worth mentioning yet. Taking it to a beat up site tomorrow to experiment with some of the new features.

My plan is to hit the site of Fort Atkinson today. Very iron infested site we have pounded for 35 years. May take the GoPro and get some video.

A fort from the mid 1800s to protect travelers on the Santa FE Trail. We have found many nice relics and only 3 coins. I found a 1935 capped half dime, a 1839 seated half dime, and my buddy found a 1840 seated dime. History has it that one of the commanders was court martialed for selling government goods to travelers and he was said to have buried them in boxes around the fort. Sounds like your typical treasure story, but I knew a guy, now passed, that found one of the boxes of jewels and coins.

Sounds like a killer spot! Good luck!

After spending several more hours using version 1.0, I decided to revert back to .71. Mainly because I found more dislikes than likes in 1.0. To me, it seems to be a little more sparky on small iron and nails (reading in the low 80s). Not so much that I can't tell that its iron once I investigate, but enough that it has me stopping to investigate more often than before, which slows me down. I don't use the new Audio Filter feature, because IMHO it enhances falsing and inhibits the depth nuance in pitch tones as I mentioned in a previous post. The high square audio is not for me, and I still don't like full tones. Also, I'm not a fan of the new TID spread.

I understand that 1.0 offers some advantages with the ability to cap the max frequency and other features. Its definitely like a whole new detector... BUT, I was already pretty happy with .71, so if I'm not gaining anything useful to ME, then I don't see the need to fix something that isn't broken.

I’ll sit back and see how it pans out, but for now I’m perfectly happy with .71.

No doubt v1.0 is not for everyone. It works great for me because I don't spend a lot of time hunting deep coins. Physically I'm just not able to recover the deep stuff anymore, so I have become mainly a jewelry hunter. Tot lots and schools are the vast majority of my hunting now.

I hunted the site of Fort Atkinson yesterday with a buddy using his E-Trac. While I didn't make any spectacular finds, I did just as well. A few small lead shot, a percussion cap, and some odd and ends lead & brass. I did get fooled by one piece of iron that was a big double headed rusty nail. Other than that it was a good experience. I do agree I liked the old iron response better, but the new depth & sensitivity to small low conductors out weight the bad for me.

I am thinking about going to the city park later if it stops raining, and see if my changes to the Silencer & Audio Response have an effect on the pesky iron.

I agree ☝️. I’m revisiting.71

I have gone back and forth between .71 and 1 and will be sticking with .71. I lose depth for sure. I did notice after being told unpairing and then repairing coil would help. It did help a little but my depth with v1 is still worse.

With all of the reports coming in from experienced users, no doubt there is some falsing issues with this new version. However, that's only part of the problem in my opinion. The other part of the problem is that 1.0 has changed so many things that it probably seems a bit overwhelming to other users. The silencer setting, the way iron volume has changed, and especially how the TID scale has changed. The revised TID scale alone is a lot to take in when you've spent months and months using the old scale (which I much preferred). Just too many changes at once IMHO. Add the fact that most users are going to instantly enable new features such as the Audio Filter or High Square just because its something new, and well, all of these things combined are going to make their trusty D2 behave in a way that they're just not used to, which is going to bring negative feedback.

It would be nice if it were possible to offer an option to boot up the detector in legacy mode when these updates are released. What I mean by that is, an option under settings to boot up using the previous version or the updated version. Would make testing new features in the wild a lot more convenient.

Very well put.

Looks like 1.1 addresses the Silencer issues that TNSS pointed out in version 1.0. He also tested 1.1 TID normalization to see if it has changed (thanks TNSS!). It is the same as 1.0 where depending on the base program, certain coins read a little lower than before. So, if you're using coin programs with a lot of notch, they'll still need to be revised. I'm going to hold off on updating for now to see if the iron falsing on small nails in the lower 80s persists.

I plan to stay on v1.0 . I have had no issues even in heavy iron sites, but then I know how to turn on my FE.TID and adjust the Silencer.

I'm curious if the battery life has gone back up with v1.1 If so, we know this is a good indicator the power was cut back from v1.0

Do you run your program's max frequency any differently in 1.0 compared to the default in .71? If so, that probably explains some of the additional battery usage.
