My First Silver Coin

Congrats DAVE, Iwas there with you and can verify the validity of the post, cause you were using my machine, and I was there for the find. I'M gritting my teeth typing this cause we both know that I went around that tree before you did and missed the coin. No worries though at least it was found. I'm not even gonna get into the Reale. Congratulations on a great find!!

wow....amazing coin for 200+ yrs old, if it is real you scored bigtime, get it graded ASAP

Dave you truly have found the treasure of a lifetime, as I stated previously, take care and find an expert that can evaluate the coin in its current condition. It may be worth WAY more than you think due to its rarity. Please do not be quick to sell it until you have explored all the possibilities. At the right coin auction it may bring $$ beyond your wildest imagination.

What he said ...

Congrats on the coin. You even need to be careful who you take it to. Do NOT let it out of your possession or direct line of sight. Treasures like that invite thieves.

You need to send it to a reputable grading service and get it graded and slabbed.

An excellent find, backed up by a witness. Everybody needs to back off and let you have your moment.

But, like many said, there's no topping this. You might as well tell Garrett to keep your detector.

The funny part about the whole day, is that when Dave found that coin we were looking at. We both knew that it was obviously old, but didnt realize exactly what he had found. We took a break around lunch because we both had a few things to do and were planning on meeting later in the afternoon again. I went home and found the dime online and then realized HOLY COW he made a major find. This was after he had posted this inital thread. Thus his ho hum "I found my first silver attitude" I wish I had a picture of him jumping up and down when he found the dime. A guy in a pickup truck actually stopped and asked what he had found because he saw Dave jumping around. We told him a pulltab! We met up later in the afternoon and hit a local park/baseball field, needless to say I was happy for Dave but salty none the less. Lets just say my finds for the day amounted to 2 wheat pennies about .90 in clad and alot of junk. At about 5:00 pm its now dark and were returning to the cars. I get a real iffy signal on the Minelab. Long story shorter I ended up with a 1817 8 Reale to top off the night. We were putting the gear away while looking at the posts on here via IPhone and laughing saying nobodys gonna believe this. Congrats again Dave, my detector rental fee is now 20% of the value of your finds.:D

Phone Call

This was so good a find..If you get a call from the White House to invite you and your coin to a Rose Garden party..I wouldn't be supprised. Congrats.

Bonesquat is right. You did barely nick it right under the last "A" in America. Or as he said maybe a rock or something else did. That coin has to have been buried at least 200 years. If not it would be much more worn out. That tiny nick would not have a different color of silver if it wasnt recent...Excellent find and gives me hope in this area...

Lmao, we believe you now.

Seriously, that find is just incredible. I agree, get that slabbed.

I cannot tell you how lucky you are to have found this. This is more rare than a gold coin. You do need to slab it right away. What a find of a lifetime. Congrats to you. It is beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!:gettinmoney::wow2::woohoo:

Sorry, but I smell something fishy. That is in WAYYYY to good of shape. If it is true. That is simply amazing. Reluctant congrats. :)

Ok I have been following this thread for a while, and can't resist giving my opinion on all of the disbelievers that have gathered here. To say that this coin is in way too good of shape, makes absolutely no sense. It's really simple to explain the wonderful shape it's in. Coins that were in circulation 200 or so years ago, were actually in "circulation" as opposed to today, where coins will drop out of circulation due to many factors, such as current value and payment methods. Coins were handled more and endured more contact than today's coins. Think about it, there were no credit cards, or other alternative means to spend money, so the coinage was used for more transactions. Today's coins can remain idle while alternative payment methods assume the burden. Therefore older coins would become worn quicker. This coin was obviously lost VERY early in its circulation and therefore looks in good shape.

I don't know what else I can do to prove I dug this coin short of a video of every hole. I would never question someone's find. Can everyone on this forum prove every find. I am having the coin checked on Friday at Delaware Valley Rare Coin Company anyone who wants to come along all are welcome. Dave
