My First Silver Coin

Why does it always seem like the poeple who have hardly any posts are the ones finding coins nobody else will ever find. They made 22,135 of this coin. Just from these pics, it looks like this coin might be around EF40 or an $11k coin. If this is real and you truly found a 215 year old coin that has no tarnish on it at all and looks like it did the day it was minted, then sorry for my skepticism and congrats...

Sour grapes baby!

Congrats on a great find.

Ya that's an unbelievable find!! Not that I don't believe you mind. I've pulled silvers from the ground that looked about that nice and then I've pulled ones that looked like !!!!. Sometimes from the same area. Maybe someday I'll get something like that :D

To spm673,

Its a shame that you dont believe someone unless they post a lot. I have not posted many things because I have not had anything to post. I dont think that the amont of posts is a way to judge. If anyone lives in Chester County PA I will show them where it was found. I will post better photos later when I get back home.

Thanks to everyone who has posted positive things.

Dave

Well Dave, you have only been here a short time. I remember many instances where people would come one make one post about an absurdly scarce coin they found and never be heard from again. Bonesquat will attest to this as well. As you can see I am not the only one who is skeptical about this find. For a 215 year old coin, it looks like it just came out of the mint. Also just about any other person I know who is really into this hobby, would have had slightly more exuburance in finding a coin that is worth $10k+. For you it just seems like "Ho Hum it is my first silver. Whoopdeedoo". Again if this is truly an md'ing find and the coin is legit, meaning many coins have been faked and that one looks real good, then congrats to you and I am sorry for my skepticism. I have not found one 1796 dime on the internet that looks as good as that one does. Even the pics in redbook are tarnished coins. Did you use anything else other than water to clean that coin? Again sorry for being skeptical but if you were here longer than you have been, you would be too...

An absolutely astounding find that should be in the "Eye-popping" section.

Don't let the naysayers get you down. I've seen a few people get unfairly dog-piled on this forum because they found something amazing, and unfortunately you never saw another post from them. Finds like yours are an inspiration to us all because it shows the possibilities out there.

Congratulations.

Well Maybe there is a reason they never post again. They get put down like I have. I am not leaving and will continue to post when I have something to post. The reason Im not yelling is I have not had the coin looked at and have no clue what its worth. Everyone thinks it worth a lot of money. When I hear it from A coin dealer then you will hear my yell.
I dug the coin in Caln Twp. Chester County PA it was cleaned with my finger and nothing else. When I first posted the pictures I had no idea what I had.

I wish I could prove it to you but I know I Dug the coin and so does my buddy who is also a member on this forum

Here are 2 more pictures

The new pics show better that is was dug. As long as that coin is not a reproduction, you have found the find of a lifetime. Also you are in an area that these can be found. Im not that far from you. Again, if you just understand my point of view and were here longer then you would see. I retract my skepticism and say awesome find Dave. Please keep us abreast of what a coin dealer might say...

Thank You, I am going to get It looked at sometime this week. I will post the info when I get it. The first pictures were with my I phone which does not take good close up pictures.

Ps I did not nick it. I found it when I crushed the plug with my hand.

Trust me bud, you nicked it. I've also found nicks where I hit silver coins with my digger AFTER knocking the dirt off. You can tell it wasn't already there because the silver is shinier where the cut is. Not trying to rag on you. Just saying - that's definitely from your digger. But it's ok! It's so tiny and barely noticeable. Won't knock value down too much.

Maybe a rock hit it when it moved around in the plug. Either way, that's a recent scratch unfortunately. Unless MORE pics can prove otherwise. :D

Bonesquat is right. You did barely nick it right under the last "A" in America. Or as he said maybe a rock or something else did. That coin has to have been buried at least 200 years. If not it would be much more worn out. That tiny nick would not have a different color of silver if it wasnt recent...Excellent find and gives me hope in this area...

I take pics all the time with my Iphone. For future reference, put the coin around the lens, Start far away and slowly bring it up so it keeps focus. You can take as good a pic as any macro camera with it. As long as it is good light, sometimes the flash makes it too bright...

Also in my opinion as long as it is real, you have a $5k-$8k coin there at least...I will be looking at those pics all night...wow!!!

I just can't stop looking at this coin. haha It is so pretty. Does Garrett do a find of the year or month thing? Cause that would get it

Yes they do and he could (and probably would) get the find of the month. They give away a free propointer. You should send your story and pics to Garrett Dave...

Wow!!! You first silver is in great shape to boot even from 1796! When you think about it, in 1796 there were only 22,135 minted and you have one. That's just incredible.

Great job you lucky dog!

Dave you truly have found the treasure of a lifetime, as I stated previously, take care and find an expert that can evaluate the coin in its current condition. It may be worth WAY more than you think due to its rarity. Please do not be quick to sell it until you have explored all the possibilities. At the right coin auction it may bring $$ beyond your wildest imagination.

Take care, ColoKid

I just wish I could find a seated here in barren Colorado.
