I spent several hours at the old Fort on Saturday. I'm used to finding small items but this time I found some larger and heavier items. First, I found a bayonet scabbard (no bayonet). Then, I found a complete mess kit though part of it was so heavily corroded that it crumbled like paper when I tried to clean it. In the same hole, I also found a corroded canteen cup. Lugging those dirt encrusted hunks of metal around all day was not fun but the hunt was a blast.

The knife was rusted to pieces and part of the blade is stuck to the fork handle

Misc. finds. If you look real close you can see the little white lead pellet.

Thanks! I don't know what to do with things like a rusty scabbard or a corroded and bent canteen cup. They don't exactly fit in a cigar box

Pic Nr. 2 upper left corner - this item looks like a pencil sharpner ...

As with every posting of cartridges/cartridge casings, I have to ask what the headstamps were. Being 30-06, .30 carbine, and .45ACP they could have come from a very broad period of time.

I'll find out for you when I get home from work. The three 30 carbine casings were from 1942-1943. I found several other casings from the teens and 1930's though.
