As the sun started to set and it got cooler (been very hot here in Central VA) went out and found this about 6 feet off my front porch. It was about 2" down.

Hey, congrats on your first coin find !

That was a lot faster then when I first started, I had a knack for keep finding just trash at first before I eventually found my first coin

Low and outside for a ball. Just missed lol. Nice find but that 65 has been a pain for many being a quarter or a dime. There should be some older coins there and hopefully some silver. Good luck, Mark

Woot! First coin and not a Zincoln- congrats! I agree. Save that first one. I have my zincoln in a ziplock for later framingšŸ˜

Thanks for responding. I am not sure I know what you mean by "earliest U.S. clad quarter, being a 1965"? I am new to this, sorry for my ignorance.

Thanks!

1964 and earlier quarters are silver. In 1965 they began making quarters (and dimes) out of clad material. Not silver, but layers of other metals, with a copper core.

Yep as Lee says above, that 1965 is the date of the first non silver U.S. quarters, dimes and halves. A big big thing to us. It causes our heart rates to raise as we begin to wipe the fresh dirt away from the just dug coin and see that 6 in the date. Just for a second or two we get a jolt!!! Looking for that next number to be anything below 5! That's where the fun is for me and most coin shooting detectorists. Looking for that next number. And of coarse its great if you get something lower than that 6 as well.
First thing I did when I looked at the picture of the quarter was blow it up and check the date. Congrats on your coin. May many more come. And some with lower numbers in the date.

Congratulations on your first coin find! It's a good feeling when you find a coin of any date.

Cheers,
Ken

Congrats, missed silver by one year. You are in a good Civil War area, so need to seriously consider hunting civil war relics. With a little research, you will be good to go.
