EQ 800 Headphones - Eisenhower vs. Mal’s

Is there anyway to mod/better the Minelab yellows? I bought those because I had free money on Amazon, and they pretty much suck. Like putting seashells up to my ears.

Funny, one of the things he criticizes is the drainage holes, then he puts drainage holes in his custom headphones.

I would suggest using the Peltors as they give you a secondary barrier for ambient noise reduction. Here’s my Excal Blue mod:

A very weak link the Koss yellows. Not much there you can change, but the good is they are one of the better one's for if your diving.
I did do a video years ago on gutting them and putting the guts in Peltor ear muffs...

This was 8 years ago..

Here is a more updated one by Tony 3 years ago..Not watched but Tony does good work..

Drain hole serve a purpose if you dive.....equalize pressure on your ears and you phones dont seem to want to float away and they clear quickly not leaving salt water to do damage. Now for waders, light snorkel or to cut wind you dont need um. Those yellows have several issues....cheaply made, to sealed they dont allow proper vibration or volume, and that cable is constantly pulling because its to short. Pay the extra $30 for a much better pair or make your own.

Follow OBN’s vid. It really is an easy mod... NO CLIPPING WIRES (as Tony did). They just go right into the Peltors H10A

I know this is an older post, but I finally am fed up with the yellows and pulled them apart tonight. I’m going to try and fit the yellow’s piezos into some extra Walker slim muffs I have on hand. Anything hopefully will be better than the yellows! Appreciate the video and Raider pointing it out.

The yellows are down to piezos and the walkers are apart to make a template to cut the piezo mount to fit.

I won’t get to that for a couple days. But hopefully this will be way better than the yellows themselves.

At the time when TE approached me about a pair of his phones .... NO ONE not even ML had waterproof phones. I wouldnt discount the build quality of his phones..... mines been around for years now and are always out there in the water.... to include snorkeling a bit or having them knocked off my head by big waves. I NEVER had an issue with a pair of his phones.... ive still got 4 pair and even sold one to a hunting buddy. Ive not even had the muffs deteriorate. TE was even willing to make me a pair to fit the MDT.... and they are the ONLY ones waterproof to fit it. He started making them and told me .... he didnt want a job. But now does them for about any machine..... and in fact i believe he now does the Grey Ghost. I pick and choose my accessories ... i dont have a $400 scoop... mine is $140 but build quality is still there.... i NEVER ever thought about paying $150 for ML yellows. Again ... ill say i have a lot of these phones that have lasted me for years now with NO issues ever. I can make my own phones and do it cheaper.... but i find myself constantly messing with them.... so why bother when apparetely i cant match the build quality or sound?

I get it, I do. I got these yellows essentially for free and water hunt summers only and very sporadically at that (unfortunately), so putting lipstick on a pig, I.e. modding these to a pair of muffs I also already owns costs me nothing again, and should help make these phones better for the few times a year I’m in the water up to my neck. Plus doing stuff like this is fun :)

I imagine those will work fine. It’s a fun task. Take your time; it’ll turn out great!

Thanks Ra1der5. Tight fit on the right side with the thicker line out wire, still need to secure the crossover wire but they sound a lot better on land so far, will be awhile before they’re tested in a lake, will report back after…

Thanks OBN for making that video!

Great looking work Ground sweeper! And your welcome. One thing about head phones... You need the best for the job, hearing what no one else can is a Big Advantage.

I agree, another you may like...
I have eliminated all of the noise caused by rushing water on one of my excaliburs. 95% of the noise is gone, no falsing of the coil when swing in the current, on shore, shallow right where the water hits the coil cable or out deep in rough waters. More testing is needed but so far Very impressive.

The conditions the other day..winds were blowing in 16-18 mph

No noise at all...

THAT, is one cool lookin Excal. When nothing else changes and all you need is the threshold to turn it on and dial it in.

I have Tony's and love them. I had a issue with the wiring and something broke I wasn't sure if it was a wire or what but I contacted Tony fully expecting to pay a bit for repair. He said send them to me and pay for return shipping and he fixed them for free and added a longer cable too.. I sent him a tip on top of Shipping to show my appreciation for his fast free repair. Total Shipping and return was a week. Took longer to ship from Georgia to California than for him to fix them... LOL.
