CS belt buckle

I don't have any doubts it's real. If it's not, someone spent a lot of effort to counterfeit it. I have the late Steve Mullinax's book on Confederate plates. Notice, on the back of yours the single hook and the circle around it. All of Steve's example have that. Also notice between the two hooks and just barely above them is a small circle. One of the originals have it, and so does yours. That particular buckle was 44 X 71 mm. Many were painted black, see if yours has any remnants of the paint. I still vote good. BTW go play the lottery today.

Nice save, hope its genuine. As far as depth, dirt could have been moved around over the years. I dug a large cent the other day that was less than 3 in. down at a place built in the 40s. Absolutely a great find. Good luck Mark

I'm no expert on CW buckles but it looks like the real deal to me.
If it's a fake then someone worked really hard at making it look authentic.

Depth is not always an indicator of age, I've found colonial shoe buckles at 2 inches down just under the pine straw layer and a 1736 two Reale at 4 inches so I would be too concerned about the depth. Erosion and tree roots can bring targets close to the surface where you wouldn't expect them...

Also if anyone is curious it rang up as 81-83 focusing mainly on 82 with the at pro. Thought I was probably digging a clad dime but hoping for a silver.

Hope its real. As a little boy (a long time ago) I held my Great Grandfathers buckle and uniform buttons in my hand. They were still in pristine condition as he was wounded and lost his right leg in his first battle. My Grandmother had the buckle and buttons and I hae often wondered what happened to them.

It's obviously a fake, but has a nice patina. I'll give you twenty bucks for it, so you don't feel so bad.
Just kidding. Looks great, but don't get your hopes up until it's verified.

This thread was recently posted, with a link to a youtube vid, where a guy tells his story of finding a similar buckle: http://metaldetectingforum.com/showthread.php?t=278277
Many thought his was fake, until Big Money started talking!
Good luck Strat!

super nice... contact me on the history..

Nice find! bet I have hunted that same school, since I work in Macon and live in your town! been hunting Macon twenty years plus now. I hope its real.. know several locals who can tell you, and knew a known counterfeiter now deceased, that put a lot out there. I can tell you who NOT to take it to locally too.

still on mend from second major surgery but back at work light duty, wife on mend but other surgeries looming. cant hunt really for a while, but give me a call and we can meet up and i can get you to THE expert in the area. one of his best friends works in my building, another enthusiast that is a re-enactor and historian. I know them both, and several more that have or had massive collections. they are honest.

Ps you don't have to tell me your spot lol! I could not dig now if I wanted too.. it still hurts and the doctor gave strict orders.

you have my info, glad to help and really happy for you.

Wow that would be fantastic!!! I'm anxious to put it in someone's hands and see what they think. Glad you're back to working light duty and really looking forward to dirt fishing with yah. Macon should have some good stuff for sure but I don't know anyone there and only can do parks and schools really.

Try and contact Charlie Harris at American Digger Magazine. Give good pictures and exact measurements. He lives in the Chattanooga area if you feel up to a drive. I know one other person in Dalton, GA who has several of those and his often show up in books, but you would need to get to him at one of the shows. He will be the one with the best buckle collection at the show. But going to the shows would give you a lot of different opinions. My money still says it good.

Beautiful! I'd be shaking if I found any Confederate buckle, or even Union, as I have yet to find a CW relic.
