Coronavirrus

According to some very respected USA scientific journals reporting on Covid 19 as late as March 13, 2020 the actual source of this virus is still not known. It does have similar characteristics for origination in bats and or in large rodents similar to our armadillos. Those animals are not consumed by humans in China. This virus will die if it comes in contact with our stomach acids anyway. It can be transmitted through our mucus membranes, eye sockets and airways. The initial investigation collected over 500 surface samples which found 33 positive Covid 19 samples in a section of an outdoor seafood market in Wuhan, China. How those samples got there is completely unknown. If the virus was transferred to humans from those samples is unknown. Did an infected human cause those samples do be deposited on those surfaces is unknown. Even human patient ZERO and their nationality is unknown.

On the good side of what is known is that Covid 19 shows absolutely no trace of being bio-engineered despite some fringe or deliberately planted (by whom???) news stories. Covid 19 is a natural environmentally produced virus that really sucks, for sure.

The governor of Illinois just mandated a Shelter in Place order for the state. Doesn't seem to have much teeth to it though, you can still go to the grocery store, gas station, bank, pharmacy, go for walks, etc etc etc.

To amplify the differences further:
  1. We have vaccines and medicines to help fight the flu, we have nothing right now against covid-19.
  2. The mortality rate of covid-19, although not as high as SARS (another type of coronavirus) appears to be higher than the flu. As of this morning, we have 566 confirmed cases in the US and 22 deaths from it. That makes for a mortaility rate of 3.88%, versus about 0.2% for the flu.

If we had more test kits available to test more patients with, the mortality rate would likely go down (availability of test kits is so limited right now that only patients with significant symptoms are being tested).

since there is no cure, I am guessing you mean more testing and more isolation will limit the spread of the virus and hence fewer deaths.

This is where I rely on getting %100 of my corona virus news. A lot of experts here

The homeless? I guess they lay their head where they can or go to a shelter.
Hotels are not closing YET but business is way down.
In general people are listening to the warnings and staying home as much as possible. My monthly poker game decided to cancel so we are setting up a private event on pokerstars instead so we can still play but from our homes.

I'd love a seat to this private game! I could use some distraction. I'm a fish. Dead money.

According to the CDC, last years flu which I got my flu shot for, had a USA death rate of .006%

Worldwide so far the death rate for Covid 19 is 4.7%.

USA death rate is 1.6% so maybe social distancing and voluntary isolation is helping.

I really appreciate all of the first responders, medical staff and medical suppliers, utility workers, equipment operators, transport repair techs, grocery store workers, bankers, mail, package and food delivery people and local, state and federal employees who are stepping up to serve all of us who are trying to shelter in place in order to limit exposure.

No, what I mean is that there are a lot of people who may be infected and are showing no, or mild, symptoms, but since they haven't been tested, we can't categorize them as confirmed infection cases. Since mortality is the ration of dead divided by confirmed cases, if the denominator was a larger number then mortality would be a smaller number.

And yes, more testing and confinement would make for fewer deaths as well as fewer new infections.

I'm assuming MA is close to a stay in place order as well. My work just issued some of its employees emergency responder ID's, which should clear us for traveling. I'm wondering if the institution knows something we dont....Tough to predict what will happen from here, but it's still spreading in my state for sure...

China has 2 days in a row of no new domestic cases.... after 2.5 months of national lockdown quarantine... see guys you can do it too. I'm convinced you can after reading some of the comments on here. 100%.

Hmmmmm. Plausible scenario; Large rodent that happens to carry the virus goes foraging in the fish market at night for scraps to eat. Maybe takes a dump somewhere. During the day, fish gets dropped on a "pocket" of the virus, gets picked back up, and sold. (So far, all involved are not suspecting anything wrong.) While prepping fish for consumption, Mama-son happens to contact a mucous membrane with her fingers......virus transferred.....and we have patient zero.
Pure speculation, but it's the innocent little things that can get overlooked.

Are you saying , if China can do it , we can do it too ? The country with all the censorship ? And you believe all the stats they put out ? Sorry Steve , China is not our friend.

I live in China. About 3 hours from Wuhan. I'm allowed out of the building for the 1st time in months. There are some nuances to keep it from popping back up...
Before, in China if you.get on a bus you are standing because the seats are full. Same with subways and trains. The population density allows a virus to just rip through the #s. Look at some of the replies on this thread and then think of new york on 100% lockdown for a month.
Enemies... friends... makes no difference. A virus has no eyes

There are representatives of the World Health Organization on-site. No way for them to hide it,

It's not good that a lot of young (and some not so young) are not taking this
seriously. They are a danger to everyone.

We've all seen the jokes and cartoons about this virus, but it is a killer in
many cases, even for younger people.

You are right that a virus doesn't discriminate. The social distancing will help. I was mainly thinking about that historically the Chinese have looked out for their own. They are not exactly forthcoming with information. And frankly just plain lie. The copyright infringements , intellectual property , counterfeits , etc they just don't care about. Now that there is a president who wants to put America 1st , they are being called out on it with enforcement. And this is how they pay us back...

Just a reminder, let's keep the posts as non-political as possible.

Thanks and everybody stay safe and healthy!!

I would like very much to respond to this in length... but I know it will be deleted.
Every government lies and twists the narrative to suit their own needs. The same since the beginning of time.

It's nothing to get super paranoid about. This disease is nothing new and has been well known about for a long time. It's a simple infection that if you seek medical care you'll be fine from. It's simply making a pass around the world as any other diseases do. It's been the media hype thing of the month to latch onto and cause panic for all the reasons they latch onto anything else. There's also a standing track record of these diseases popping up all over the media before election season because it's drives the markets into a frenzy. Remember Sars (a Corona strand), zika, swine flu, bird flu, etc...

Wash your hands, get treatment if you feel sick, and you'll be fine.

So what do you think now?

I agree Steve , they all do to a certain extent. But the good old USA have been taken it way to long. Hope your going to be ok out there. I sure hope this blows over relatively soon. Being locked up like that has gotta be tough on you.

Check out something called Event 201 if you have some free time on your hands.
