Coin Shortage (again?)

We certainly found out how a small sign can control people when those covid signs on the floor of the supermarket told people to only walk in a certain direction and the "robots" followed orders.

My brother and I are not robots so we walked in the opposite direction then what the arrows showed to walk.

Funny how my post get deleted under the guise of "conspiracy theory", yet it was 100% factual. I didn't mention politics in any way. Free speech doesn't exist even though what I said about my cousin working at the hospital in New Orleans was accurate. Darn shame.

Come on guys, the title/topic of this thread is "Coin shortage (again?)".

Please leave your Covid issues out of it.

LOCAL THRIFT stores are complaining about not having coins. Exact amount of purchase. i ran a bunch of coins thru the coin counter at my credit union and the young lady said they were having problems getting enough coins to meet the demand.

The Lowe's by my house has a big sign mentioning the coin shortage and if we could "kindly pay by credit/debit card or use exact change". Maybe it's time for me to cash in all my clad to help alleviate the situation!

That’s what I did during the last coin shortage. Started a MDing only bank account. It’s up over 1k, which is fun!

One place we get gas, said they have no problem getting most change except quarters. So we exchanged $125.00 in quarters to help them out.

No shortage here in California. There never really was, especially with us detectorists pumping the coins back into the system 👍

My wife works at a local grocery store. The store put a sign on the coinstar machine saying that all coins should be turned in at the courtesy booth. can you imagine the clerk counting out my 10 pounds of pennies? Or the $150 in clad every month? NADA.

Whatever.......

wonder how that pans out with coinstar, basically stealing their business!

I was in a Walmart this morning and attempted to buy a couple of small items....total cost less than three dollars. The self help machines had signs posted that it was "card only". I'm not about to use a card for a three dollar purchase so I left the items right there. No other stores in the area are doing this including a different Walmart in another town.
On the way home I stopped at a Dunkin' Donuts for a coffee and donut and the bill came to $3.09. I handed the guy at the window $4.00 and he gave me back 91 cents in change. NO PROBLEM.......

I'm sure the amount of sales that Dunkin' Donuts has in a week is miniscule compared to that Walmart you visited.

Yet 30 years ago when I said "We could very well see a cashless society in our lifetime" They all laughed at me. Honestly if there IS a shortage of coins anywhere it isn't by chance. It is another way the. get money digitized.

Governments love digitized money! It's really hard to evade the taxing authorities or launder cash when there's a digital trail of where the money goes.

Of course, there are things like cryptocurrency that throw a wrench in that plan...

Someone bring me up to speed. What do they claim is causing the coin shortage?

covid-19 outbreaks at the mints?
covid-19 outbreaks at the copper and silver mines?
covid-19 outbreaks at the mfgs that make parts for the coin minting machines?
covid-19 outbreaks at the govt facility where they engrave the coin dies?

Why not any shortages in one dollar bills?

I must be missing something here.

Too bad there is not a shortage on making square tabs, bottle caps and screw caps, that would go a long way in making my life easier.

There is an explanation of the cause here. Short version is it was caused by a change in spending habits.
