I don't find very many projectiles other than musket balls and modern bullets at my main hunting site. I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me an ID on the civil war era bullet and a time frame for when they were made.
It is almost impossible to tell when an old bullet was made because many civil war guns were used to hunt way after the war. Also there are many black powder shooters who use similar bullets and balls. I for instance use an original Colt mold to cast bullets for my 1860 Army model colt and after thirty years or so in the ground they look pretty much dug ones from civil war sites.
Well it's not a modern bullet that's for sure, since the site I found it on is family property and no one has ever hunted on it. I've found civil war era coins and relics nearby, however there wasn't any real action going on to speak of.

I know I'm digging up an old post but. It looks like a Minié ball http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minié_ball
As stated dating not easy as they were used through the Civil War and long after for hunting.
