AT Pro Newbies... Talk to me

I am i=right outside of Pittsburgh. The weather turned great here today, and I was out after work for about 3 1/2 hours. I found $1.36 in clad. Also found some junk. I seem to be digging more coins and less trash, but that is by only digging high tones. Still finding large trash, but I am really afraid that I am passing stuff up that is high tone mixed with weird signals. And, so far, where I have hunted, it is not conducive to digging really deep, because I hit stone or roots. But I also think that the coin should stop sinking at that point, so it should be within range. Not sure....what do you folks think?

i think coins that have been in the ground since the late 1800s to early 1900s could very well be under the roots. i dug an 1888 indian the other day at 4 inches. the newest penny i have dug from this site is a 1969 lincoln. and a lot in the 1940-1945 range.

Use that iron audio in pro mode its helps you identify the good and bad targets. This is one of the great advance features of the ATPRO.

I really like to try around trees, perfect areas:yes: I dug one today but got a rusty nail. Too much interference from a metal rode sticking out of the ground.

I read the VDI charts on a lot of threads but problem is Im digging rusty iron:?:

Keep in mind this is an advanced detector. It will pick up more than a rusty nail in some cases. Always rescan your hole too. In some cases you will find that if the tone is good enough, there might still be a coin down below. As a beginner, dig everything and remember how it rings up. But the coil is very large on the ATPro, you can be scanning a very large area picking up multiple targets in your swing.

Iron audio can be tricky for a new user. Remember, iron audio helps determine if iron is in that range of your swing, but does not necessarily mean ALL targets are iron below the surface. You'll learn to hear when there are good targets below. And remember not to use iron audio full time. Just around areas you detect a target.

I always rescan. When you pick up multiple targets do you turn the sensitivity down?

i would not, your coin may be the signal that drops. i dig to eliminate the iron signal if i think i have two signals. this has paid off for me in the past.

I would not adjust sensitivity after a target is made. Here is what I do if I get multi-tones or a good high signal.

1 - pinpoint the target

2- turn 90 degrees and scan area again to make sure signal is still there. I'll still dig it, but it gives me more confidence of the tone.

3 - iron mask audio ON to see if there may be iron in the area

4 - pinpoint and dig

5 - rescan after any item is made

I can not stress enough how the large DD coil can pick up items like no other and it gets confusing. If there are two items within your swing and you pinpoint the WRONG item you may pass the goodies up. For instance, I was detecting with the larger coil picked up a high tone and low tone in that order. I pinpointed on the back half of my swing which was the lower tone... dug it and found junk. I moved on because I rescanned my whole but not my full swing. On the way back to that location a couple days later, got a hit in that same area and it was the original GOOD target I was looking for.

This guy might be a member of this forum... but this video (long) is GREAT for demonstrating my point.

Must be doing SOMETHING right...

Here are pics of today's finds. I must be starting to learn the language of the AT Pro. I operated in Pro zero metal, with disc set at 25. I only dug steady high tones, and a few iffy signals with highs mixed in. I got 65 coins, 2 of which were wheaties. I also got a broken earring that still has the stones in it. The earring was in a dime hole, or I may not have found it since the AT Pro wouldn't even pick it up laying on the ground. Still no silver, though. The relatively small amount of trash is, hopefully, indicative of recognizing better signals. Let me know what you think. Thanks for looking and HH!!

Thank you all!

When I'm scanning I am picking up numerous VDIs. It doesn't just go beep on a target. I listen and hear what I think is a good tone then nothing on VDI. I always ground balance throughout my hunt. I will have to watch the video.

If you hear a tone but see nothing on the VDI, it might be a DEEP target. I have found that in most cases DEEP targets on the at pro that don't show a VDI are usually large items like pipes and such. But you never know! Could be a treasure chest! :p

I originally didn't have any disc set myself. I thought about it about an hour into the hunt and it seemed to calm the machine down some. Made it alot easier to concentrate on real targets.

That is what I'm hoping for but will have to plant a lot of grass seed:lol:

You're way ahead of me, keep me posted on your hunts

Nah, you will get there, Mama!!! Just keep takin it out for a walk and listen to it real good...you notice there aren't any nickels in that post. Dug consistent 80's and up that were steady. If it bounced between anything lower than 72 or so and 80's I didn't dig it. Clad pennies ring up at 73 or so on my machine from air tests. I did get a pocket spill of 6-7 coins, a dime and a bunch of pennies, one of them was one of the wheaties. I did guess a couple of targets before they came out of the ground, but I was wrong a bunch of times too. Silver should ring in higher from there, from what I understand, but I still haven't found any. We will both get this machine down pat! I did this at a school I attended when I was in 6-8 grade. It was almost all found in the island between the driveway and a road next to the driveway. Guaranteed it is not 1200 sq ft. I took me over three hours, just to get this small spot done, because of all the digging. The first 5 holes i dug were all coins, pinpointed relatively well, and there they were! I hope that this was not a fluke. Nice to have days like that. I had dreams of the first silver and the most silvers in a day, and the like. But if nothing else, the AT Pro is a penny killer!!! At least it was for me today... HH!

'612, you seem to be getting your Pro down fairly well. I really need to start using the other features it has avail. I just set in on pro coin and go. Been lazy I guess.

612, you are becoming the pro! No fluke you are learning the machine!

Part of my issue is a swept my yard with my Umax and haven't take the pro out. I was going over some things I found last night and can't identify them. Need to clean them. I found some things that were not attracted to a magnet but were metal? I will take a photo and post

I experimented in every mode yesterday for my first real hunt and came to rest in the pro zero mode for most of the hunt. I left the iron audio off until I located a target then turned it on just before digging to see if I got any more info about the target. I dug some clad and my first gold. It was a 14K crucifix that rang up a weird sounding 43. I posted pics of it on here yesterday. Still learning the machine. I am fixing to grab some breakfast and hit the road for my second hunt. I'll know more this afternoon.

Sonny.

I'm heading to the park today. After spending 3 hours in the park yesterday I can tell you that the propointer can't get here quick enough. I bet I could have covered double the area if I had the propointer to help me once the lesche got the plug cut.
