$$$$ Would you return it?

I am currently in this debate with the rolex beach find. I am keeping it and cashing it. My financial situation has made this so. I do not regret the decision at all, as the money really helps my family. Those who must be more financially sound feel I should make an effort to return it. If I were a fellow 1%'er, I would go to the ends to find the owner, but right now, today, finders keepers. My "moral fiber" is in question, but I know who I am and how I would handle all situations, and my "moral fiber" is intact.

Have you considered insurance claims? They usually require a police report, either lost or stolen. What happens when you go to sell the watch, and the buyer wants to check it's legal status? Might not be helping your financial situation as much as you think. Some states have laws about "finder's keeper's"...

I have returned jewelry. I'm glad I did it, and will do it again if given the opportunity. It is a personal decision, kinda like Ford vs Chevy or Blond vs Brunette. Some people have pretty strong OPINIONS, and try to strong arm or shame others into their way of thinking. Congrats on the find, I'm sure it was exciting no matter what you choose to do with it.

My feelings, still.............

If you really want to give back, there are a whole bunch of helpful charities out there.....

Dump the metal detector and cut through the stinky stuff to the real question..if you don't return the bling will the big guy above get mad and press the down button.
The morality issue again, and I seriously don't think any diety with enough umph to create every thing really cares what you do with your found bling.
Rather, I think any power with the ability to let me take a tiny electronic comb, use it to comb through the first few inches of dirt on a planet with billions of tons of the stuff, and find a tiny piece of bling, had greater things in mind than my condemnation for keeping it.
Likewise, if I found the bling in the yard of a bawdy house after a night of drinking, cussing, fighting and other lacivious conduct I wouldn't expect a host of sparkly winged creatures to appear and begin serenading me with their harps for attempting to return it.
I'm not Catholic so it would be very impartial of me to go into a confession booth in my local cathedral, make sure there was no one else present, and ask if I should return the bling.
Probably the only sound I would hear would be MY own conscience talking because the big guy is too busy pushing down buttons at the bawdy house to morally judge me adversely for whatever I chose to do with a piece of bling, regardless of it's earthly value.
And, lest we forget the people who found $30,000.00 in a couch purchased at Goodwill, traced it back to the lady who donated:clapping: the old couch to Goodwill and recieved a whopping $100.00:holycow: for their benevolence.
I only wish I was afforded a set of circumstances which required my decision to keep or return a piece of lavish bling.....the only thing certain about my decision is you certainly would never read about it on this forum!

I've thought about this before your question came up. I'd return it, but I would like a clear picture of the ring and a picture of me handing it back to the owner. That's not to much to ask in return is it?

Nowadays, it is. As a matter of fact, some people can be downright
ungrateful.

On two occasions (non-detector finds), I found a purse & a
wallet. Between the two, $750. I looked for ID. Found it, and returned both,
with the money. (WHO DOES THAT?) Would you believe neither person I
returned them to looked the least bit happy, relieved, or thankful? All I got was,
"Gee, I was wondering what happened to that. All right then. Buh-Bye."

Never again. What I find in my travels, stays in my pocket.

I hear you and I'm sorry that happened to you. I've been on the other side. I lost a small change purse with $400 (in bills) in it. A lady found it on the ground near my car and waited until we came back and she returned it to me. I offered her half the money - she refused. I offered her the standard (?) 10% finders fee - she refused. I profusely thanked her and offered to buy her lunch - ($20) - she took it. Wow, how nice is that.

For me, I would try to find the owner if not possible then it is mine to keep. If you can find the person or if deceased a relative, you have done an awesome thing to return it.

Lets say that you find an item, Maybe a ring for example and to keep it interesting lets throw in some greed or temptation factor and say that it is worth 10 - 20 or maybe even $30,00.00 or maybe it's just a class ring that originally sold for a few hundred dollars, Bottom line this ring means alot to some one and you can tell it is a fresh drop. What would you do? Would you claim finders keepers or would you make an effort to find the owner by searching adds etc or maybe even posting an add of your own which didn't include a detailed description of said ring ? Keep in mind that there may or may not be a name engraved in the ring as i want to cover all possible angles to the find here. I would like to keep this as not a legality question but strictly a moral question ( What would you do ) without hearing well they probably had insurance.
I look forward to your replies
if I find it it's mine . sorry!

I would keep it but that's just what I do. I hoard gold and silver. But sure if it makes u feel any better go ahead give it away.

i hoard everything i find including jewelry and old coins to one day hand down to my daughter, i certainly didn't shell out thousands of dollars worth equipment to start up a free recovery service tracking down owners of the lost items.....and i have no problem sleeping at night. But if someone approaches me asking to help find something for them they recently lost i have no problem assisting them

For me, the answer is simple. If YOU'RE wife lost her $30,000 ring. What would you like the guy that found it to do?

Geez, just "do the right thing". See...easy.

If you lost something as you have described would you hope someone would return it to you? Karma is a beotch sometimes. Just a thought.

If my wife wore a $30,000 in the water, it would be insured, and or I already have enough money to not give a hoot...

From the moment I wake up, till I go to bed..

I'll be a pirate till the day I'm dead!!!

:pirate:

If you want to return stuff sell your machine and rent some DVDs.....
