$$$$ Would you return it?

Great point.. By the way if i could afford a 30K ring and was stupid enough to wear it at the beach...I think i would deserve to loose it...:D

Still doesn't make it right to keep it if it's been advertised as lost OR has name/initials in it.

This thread is one of those that causes bad feelings between members with different viewpoints of "Whats the right thing to do" ethics. I vote it gets closed.. Anyone else?

Come on, just let people have their fun! Its obviously a very popular and long-running thread. I've read it a couple times before. If it hurts anyones feelings, they can just ignore it.

This thread is all ready a black eye on the forum.. I'm amazed it's still open after the Craigslist ad that was made because of this thread and a expensive ring found by a member.. Soo no, the fun has already been had.. And it wasn't fun in the least bit to be honest.

My attitude toward returning a $30,000.00 ring would be greatly influenced by the fact the person who lost it would NEVER allow me to metal detect their manicured front lawn....or even at the end of their lengthy driveway to look for a dime.
They chose to look down on me and my hobby before I found their ring, and I sure wouldn't want to embarrass them by offering to return a ring I could never afford otherwise, and they were stupid enough to lose.

Reminds me of the time the painter bid painting the inside of an affluent home. Upon starting work he was told by the homeowner that he was not to be socializing with her bridge club that met on Wednesday afternoon or her neighbor that visits regularly. He told her that if he would have known that he wouldn't be expected to socialize with her friends that he would have bid the job a whole lot cheaper.

Oh, you asked them? What EXACTLY did they say?

They chose to look down on me and my hobby before I found their ring

They did? How do you know that? Are you saying you know who the owner was?

If it's in my scoop it is mine. Pirate law:)

If someone asked me to find something and I did I would return.

If I find something on an open beach its mine. I am not looking for an owner.

i hoard everything i find including jewelry and old coins to one day hand down to my daughter, i certainly didn't shell out thousands of dollars worth equipment to start up a free recovery service tracking down owners of the lost items.....and i have no problem sleeping at night. But if someone approaches me asking to help find something for them they recently lost i have no problem assisting them

So, when you drive off from the parking lot after accidently leaving one of your $1000+ machines leaning on the fencepost, and then see it on craigslist the next day for sale by someone who found it, you are just going to say "Sucks to be me"???????

Okay.........

Yeah, okay.........

No one is going to return a metal detector  My friend left his scoop against his truck and drove off... when he returned it was gone and he put a few ads up with no response...

Someone's using it to find their own gold

I'm the same way

Must be an AT-Pro, coins and rings literally squirt out of the ground as you walk by.

I make sure i buy only Garrett equipment. I have mine so refined that it will tell me what the target is. what the current market value is and shoot it into my gathering pouch. I am still trying to get it set up so it will make calls to those who lost the items...:laughing::laughing:
