Since I’ve been going at this new hobby way to hard my body needs to mend so I don’t compromise my ability to do my paying job… While my poor back and knees heal I want to plan a strategy for this community park I’ve found..

I’ve used my sniper coil on 3 trips with approx. 10 hours of labor. The tot lots are so clean I couldn’t find even a penny and I was surgical with my sweeping. All other areas showed hundreds of zinc penny signals pull tabs and can slaw with the very rare clad quarter or dime from the mid 70’s so it’s obvious it is or has been hit hard by selective hunters. Those 3 hunts yielded a load of pennies and trash, with two quarters and one dime.

If and when I return to this place I’m not really looking forward to digging a bunch of pennies and trash but wonder if it’s worth my time and effort to bother since it will tax my body horribly.

What would you seasoned coin shooters do?

If the hobby is that bad for your body, maybe you should try a different hobby. Not trying to be a jerk here, but if it is that bad on your body, why bother? If you cannot dig many plugs, you at least need to move to an area where there are way less signals.

My main problem is I always go over board whenever I do something and a little obsessive at times. If I can learn to practice moderation things would be different. Once I get my act together, mentally I wanted to form a plan.

Step 1 - pace yourself. Hard to do when so excited about hobby. Plan ahead how long you want to hunt and how many plugs you want to dig. I try to do 2-3 hour hunts. If I hunted for 8 hours, I probably would not go out for a few days.

One more question Jim - what are you hoping/expecting to find? If you want gold, you need to dig virtually every signal you get. This hobby is much more work than people realize.

If its silver you want you could discriminate everything below a dime. This would eliminate you getting those unwanted penny's, nickels, gold, etc...
You won't be bending down much at all. Of course your limiting your finds when you cherry pick.

Jimmy, I've got no advice on the tot lot, but maybe this'll help for your back (maybe help with the knees, too!)

Couple of months ago, I bought the Teeter Hang Ups inversion table. You've probably seen the ads on TV. My wife's back, and mine, cried for some relief, and I figured I'd try this thing out. It was $300, more or less.

We've each been using it about ten minutes every day, and it has made an amazing difference for us. I don't want to sound like an ad here, so I'll shut up...but it really works!!

No more back problems for us (as long as we use it every day, like I said...about 10 minutes, total).

Maybe something to think about.

All the best to you!

I would rather find gold or silver and think that's what most coin shooters would strive for. I realize hard work = rewards and do need to pace myself.

Since this site is obviously cherry picked I assume I need to dig every signal to maybe find the better metals. I guess my question is since there are so many trash signals present then it's possible there's gold and silver lurking?

OK Jim - here is the best advice you will get from anyone regarding detecting. I see you have an F2. Look up the member Digger27 and read his posts. He has helped many people get up to speed with the F2 and he is an expert in its use. Read thru all his posts regarding the F2. You will be amazed at the tips and knowledge Digger shares.

I've read Digger27's posts and did learn quite a bit...

Wonder what the chances are that a trashy but cherry picked site would yield gold or silver. I know there are no guarantees just trying to figure out the law of averages.

Will keep that table in mind. At 60 years old I've never learned moderation. Working hard just in the mornings and having the afternoons off makes me antsy with this great weather and it's hard to sit home and rest when I'm thinking about getting out there and swinging...

Gold yes, silver, probably not...

Silver does not hardly ever come in the trash range. Usually silver starts at dimes and goes up from there...

Gold will usually come in between iron and zinc, usually though really close to the nickel range. White gold seems to come in much lower for me, in the foil range...

If you really want silver, you don't have disc anything out, just don't dig those signals....

This happens to me but its is in cycles.

I suffer horribly and understand about your troubles. I would not give up on tot lots, but just hit under the equipment, in front of slides, and where the kids can hang upside down. It will eliminate the bulk of the lots then for a faster hunt.

You may want to visit the park in late after noons or on a sunny Sunday and see just where folks are, and what they are doing to plan your future hunts.

Tabs and pennys hide rings and necklaces. To not dig them means you are missing the good stuff.

To increase your finds hit the open areas in the middle of the field. Use a large coil, go deep, 10" inches if you can. Ignore all but the best signals. One penny could equal a pocket spill. I find many of them that way. I find old silver at 8" inches or deeper.

Here is my best tip, I got it off the digger show. Hillsides produce a lot of finds for me. You see a small hill, hit it hard, you wont be disappointed. I hope I just didnt make your hunt harder by giving away a few tips to your competition. Good Luck.

Kind of odd; when I hunt often I go through some pulled muscles and whatnot at first but then I can hunt all day long without consequence. Maybe do squats or something during your off time. :D

As far as finding things, DIG IT ALL. the F2 is great but it isn’t magic. We need to dig every solid signal.

I do work hard each day usually until noon and that alone puts a hurtin on my 60 year old body. Having some nasty things going on in my back, spine and one knee kind of limits my zeal to do squats.

I have free time in the afternoons and I NEED to learn how to pace myself. If I plan on going out swinging for just an hour it ends up being 3 or 4....

If the site isn't that old, you're probably not going to find silver coins. The only time I go to parks anymore is if there is a long history to the park or if something was there before it was a park. Not worth my time to dig clad all day. In 4 years I have yet to dig a piece of gold. In that time I have dug thousands of pull tabs and with your bad back, I don't know if you will want to keep digging trash signals. My advice is to find an older place where silver coins might be...
