AT Pro Newbies... Talk to me

I'm glad I now know what an etrac sounds like.

An hour or so of the wOOOooo WoooOOO woooo and I would stick forks in my own ears to make it stop.

Well after watching the videos, which were excellent, I don't feel bad about being fooled by those darn pull tabs..
Well done, dirtfishin..thanks..
Sonnydigs

I don't know if the guy (Dirtfishing) on utube is a member of the forum??

 I don't like watching videos on my iPhone or PC. This one was an exception. It wAs really good!
I dont know who the guy is that posted the video but BRAVO!

The video was very informative. I must say that I've often ignored that same "chirpy" signal instead only digging clear coin-like signals. It's just now occurring to me that clean coin signals could sound chirpy if trash is near it. I've got a lot of sites to revisit!

Let's keep posting videos we come across that show the AT Pro's screen and sounds during a real hunt. It's very helpful for those of us without anyone around to talk to in person!

P.S. Anybody else think he should have edited the first find and made it the last find instead? The video kinda let me down in the end....

I've wondered about those signals myself since I've gotten a lot of those. I was trying to identify them through videos on utube and came across this one. Maybe if he posted it last, we wouldn't have watched the rest. I wouldn't have, lol

Video Hunt

I am hunting today and will try to take some video. I've never recorded any hunts, bare with me. Thanks :)

One was junk and the other was okay. I used my iPhone and it was difficult to keep it steady and get audio through to the headphones. That was the last time I tried.

I'm new to the hobby and have been at it for about 2 months now. I've found a ton of junk, but also about $8 in clad (70 coins). No silver yet or important relics or jewelry, but I'm hopeful (one Wheat and two old tokens though). I must admit being a bit distrustful of the VDI number/sound combination in pro mode. I've pretty much mastered clad coins down to about 6". Their sound and VDI numbers are pretty consistent and I'm confident about not missing any while I hunt when I hear them.

What I'm concerned about is just how many relics or pieces of jewelry I pass up because the sound might be iffy vs the strong tone of a coin. I know many small gold rings and chains ring in at lower numbers (40-50), but what do they sound like? Is it a clear strong tone like a coin, or the chattering broken tone of a bottle cap or foil?

It would be great if we could start an audio recording thread that combines a picture, VDI number, and Audio/Video recording of a given object.

I'm loving this hobby, but I can't shake the feeling that every time I pack up to leave that I've left behind great targets because I simply can't dig every 40-50 target with an iffy sound. Just too much trash up here in New England. Thoughts? :(

P.S. this is a duplicate post from one I made a few days ago in the AT Pro group. No answer there so I figured all the action was here. Looking forward to a response!

I watch the odd youtube video and one of them they have the vdi numbers at the side but its not an at pro, it does sound good though....id say the best idea would be to go search your house and get those silver ear rings, necklaces, rings, 10k, 14k 18k etc and do some air testing in pro mode and see what comes out

I dig everything. When I was attempting to take video that time, I caught the Mercuy Dime find. I had opened opened the plug and saw it. I put everything back and started recording as I scanned it with the Pro. The sound came out okay thru the headphones. I'm not sure how to post a video on here? Or do I have to link it thru UTube?

youtube is easiest way.

New sound last night worth noting. I got a clear iron grunt followed by a high tone ping. Both sounds were clear not the squelchy bottle cap sound.

So I went to the other side of the target and got the ping followed by the grunt. Hmmm

Dug it and got a big rusted wiring staple and my first Barber dime!

Nothing earthshattering but I thought it was rare to have the two distinct sounds so close but not bleeding over each other.

Very impressive machine we have here!! :D

Thanks for describing the sounds and their sequence! That helps me out. do you happen to remember the VDI's too? Sometimes I think I am ignoring good signals because of the proximity of iron grunts next to them. Apparently, that's a big mistake.

As of late, I've started digging all substantial iron signals. Turned up a lot of farm tools. No old coins yet (except for a 1939 wheat), but I havn't been hunting much beyond my backyard which was a farm pre-1950.

Digging iron is not a bad thing, especially when in older areas. You could be pulling cannon balls and the like up!

I could give a perfect example! :)
