Default Funny Things that Happen While Detecting

Since summer is on the way, you are going to experience people coming up and trying to talk to you and ask what you're doing. How do you handle these busybodies? What do you say?

For instance, we were out detecting a beach and two young ladies came over and asked if I was looking for radioactive material!

Several times we have been accused of "clamming" in the off season.

Let's hear some things that people have said to you, asked you, or some funny experiences.

At the beach and parks I use headphones to eliminate the surf noise and in the park to eliminate the boom box and leaf blower noises. It also deters people from trying to talk to me. It is rare that a person will approach me when I have my headphones on.

Or like my busy body neighbor lady. I'm detecting on the boulevard and she stops and says "What would you do if I threw a penny down?" Not really knowing what to say, I just said the first thing I thought of....I'd pick it up

some dude asked me if I really find coins with those gadgets? I said no, this is a metal detector, you need a coin detector to find coins.

I have to agree with the next guy on the tread saying that is funny. Great sense of humor.

I don't get people saying stupid things often and only thing comes to mind is them saying are you looking for gold? Back when I had a cheap detector in 1973 I went with my wife's great uncle to a carnival ground , they were packing up and the people got iritated with all the people metal detecting. One jerk tosses down a couple quarters and makes some noise and waved his foot over them and says something like look what I found with just my foot. I walked on ignoring him. I guess some of those detecting were deep into it and maybe got in their way now and then.

kids are usually my biggest problem they want to watch and get in too close or stand in front of me watching as I am walking toward them detecting and I have to explain to them they are in the way or work around them and then they just get back in front of me again. Then there are the ones that want to dig when you find something. I am glad that most of the time kids don't bother me other than to ask how I am doing and tell me their dad use to take them detecting or something like that.
I don't mind being interupted by others that have stories or talk about them getting a metal detector. I have gotten a lot of great stories to listen to and seen some nice finds they found. Seems too many can't find the time to go anymore or often enough.

Not anything too funny, but only story i have so far.

I found a target and started digging, digging more and more. After a few minutes i hear a strange sound wosh wosh wosh.. i look up left and there's a dog 'attacking' me at full speed. Oh dear... I can add that im afraid/have huge respect for dogs so my body just froze to ice. Luckily it was a nice dog that maybe though he found he digging pal. Then the owners to the dog came up and asked the ordinary 200 questions about what i was doing and if i found any treasures.

Can add that the thing i dug was a Fanta can and it was very deep.

Kids are the best. I see them pepper the sand with clad. I pass over the clad then come back and act as if I did not see them do it. They think they got one over and Im richer . I had one smart as in front of his friends hand me a dollar bill and said go buy myself a beer, for which I took the dollar put in my pocket and said I would sure like to have his ring
Hope to see ya at the Hunt Carol& Vlad

I had a sweet old lady ask us if we were going fish. Fishing? I thought, then she went on to say she had never seen a gadget like ours. She thought we were using our detectors to shock worms and bring them to the top were we would then pick them out of the ground.

Had the same question from someone. They asked if I was looking for worms.

That's a good one. But I can understand her line of thinking since my grandfather who loved fishing used an electric rod to bring worms to the surface. It was fun to watch as kids - though I'd hate to have been one of the worms. Do they even make those rods anymore? I wonder if anyone was ever killed using one?

They are easy to make. Been shocked a few times getting too close to the probe.

Dont think enuff amps to kill anyone, hell barely makes the worms squirm............................

Now that's rich, lol I haven't had anyone come up to me yet. Of course I'm usually in places where others aren't around either.

I dont care for people around me when I hunt, thats why I switched from beaches to land mostly, unless Im out with my friends. Cause at beaches I always seem to get this certain child that looks at me and when I pull something out I get the question "Did you find treasure?" Which is fun for the first time, but when he is following for 30 mins, I just pretend I cant find anything and he get bored

Almost forgot. Last Wed. I was detecting an old burned down barrel factory. As I was moving the coil over the ground, I scared up a field mouse that promply ran right at me and made it up to my knee before I was doing a dance like I never did before. The wife was sitting a short distance away, saw the whole episode transpire, and about wet herself watching the show. Wasn't exactly funny to me, but she sure got a kick out of it.

Ha, while I was a work in the office, the clerk pulled a desk door out and a mouse ran over her hand and she (about 6'2' 250#) jumped stright up on the desk. Now, that was funny. The mouse ran into the boss' office. We did not tell him. :-)

I get the normal people coming up to the waters edge asking what I am doing, others ask if the water is cold, one young woman asked if I was cold in the water and I told her I was cold but if she was in the waders with me I would be a lot warmer, she smiled and laughed and wished me good luck

I get asked hows the fishing? Are you clamming? Do you know you're not allowed to clam here? Sometimes depending on my mood I will say I am from Homeland Security and I am looking for mines...

What's with the questions about clamming?? I think if I got asked "Are you clamming?", I would say "No, I'm looking for the lost portal to the alternate dimension I am from. My work is done here."
