Recently a detecting bud of mine and his sister went over to our local city pool/park to do some detecting, upon arrival noticed someone had been in there digging and with improper plug technics killed a bunch of grass spots. Instead of cutting a flap plug they took the top of the grass off without the root structure than proceeded to dig then put the grass top back on the hole. We live in a fairly small rural area and would hate to have ruined the limited detecting opportunities we have. I am thinking of possible starting not so much a local detecting club though it may lead to that but maybe just a time for those interested or active in the hobby to get together a couple of different times to talk about ethics, proper digging technics, and other concerns of the hobby in our area. Any input from you the forum memberson how to advertise garner interest and schedule a get together time without spending a bunch of $$$ would be appreciated. Thanks Chris

I live in r.i. and there is a small park in providence that I hunt pretty regular. I had the police check me out once to watch what I was doing. I picked up a tip from somewhere about putting grass seed around my "flap" Once he saw what I was doing there was no problem. I bought a bag of seed 3 years ago and I still have over 1/2 bag left. I just throw a handfull into a baggie when I'm headind to a park/lawn and drop a few after I recover the pull tab/ nail,/alum foil or whatever. People like to see that and the seed is cheap and easy.

...get together a couple of different times to talk about ethics, proper digging technics, and other concerns of the hobby in our area.

Chris, talking about ethics and digging etiquette is like giving a safety lecture - though it is important, it isn't fun, and very few people will be interested in attending.

Find a way to make it fun - make people want to come - and you can sneak in your ethics material along with the information that drew the folks.

For example, instead of promoting your meeting as an ethics discussion, advertise a free demonstration of a new detector, or a talk on the secrets of getting better depth, or how to determine where the good stuff is most likely to be found (feel free to steal material from my podcasts: http://thetreasurecorner.com), and advertise free refreshments and door prizes (like a Buffalo nickel, an Indian head penny, etc).

Let us know if you try a meeting, and how it goes if you do!

Best of luck,

---Dan

Thanks for the responses so far notes are being take and will probably put together a powerpoint presentation for a first informal "meeting/get together"

Locate missing stones:

Good idey about the grass seed ~~would be nice to have a bit of water too. Digs always show later ~~ I knew a friend that was escorted by the arm and walked from property for digging it up. Also heard where a couple guys were ordered to water and care for digs they had made. (Not good)
I always cut thistles and ( Danties if not too many)when about too. I read where wagon train were so glad to get to where some dandelions (sp) were located in route where the train could have fresh greens ~~a change in diet.) (Wish They would come by My place)
Also read where some train folks had brought some new fangled style tin cans of food ~~some died and others got really sick ~~cans contained lead.
Also lots died from a plant they found out to be poisen SNAKE ROOT ~~got into cows milk and found out to be a killer. Called Milk-sick.
(Abe Lincoln's Mother died from it)
That used to be a code of old to cut thistles when finding them.
Another story I read about Rattle Snakes killed also ~~one story was that G A Custer Camped in a place where they killed 40 Rattlers from their camp site before camping.
"Meanwhile back at the ranch"
I have found that when finding a ring or jewlery item with a missing stone ~~if no stone or set. Get a paper cup and fill it with the surrounding dirt and apron it. Take it home or to a water source~~later.
When located at a water source rinse ~~(pan)wash the dirt until gone or stone is located. Just like the gold panners just wash till found ~~got to be careful if small diamond or stone that care is used. At home use a screen to wash it through careful. <:o ( ~~.
What You all think about that?

There is no earthly way I'll carry around grass seed to take care of places that may die when I cut a plug. That is just plain overkill to appease the people who have a problem with you.

I use a army shovel and go around the place I dig. About the size the of your coil. And then I brake up the turf. Then I put the turf back where it was. But even I can not get it right all the time. Some dirt is still on the ground where I dig. But sometimes I go back the next year and I couldn't find where it was. So do your best to put the dirt and grass where it was. And hopefully it will come back.

I'm a little confused. Some say to leave one side of the hole attached like a hinge. This video show a complete 360 degree cut. Which is correct?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EemmbOHr39Y&feature=related

A complete circle cut is much more likely to leave a dead grass circle, and also much more likely for the cut cone to be jerked from the hole when the lawn mower comes through.

Always leave as much of an uncut flap as possible. Watch my video! (above)
