Heh all,

Do you need to get permission to metal detect at schools?

All depending where you live. When there in session and having classes no absolutely not and that goes for everywhere, but when there out for the summer, breaks and weekends the play grounds are fair game, but around here there's a keep of the grass policy at one school around the main buildings.

I hunt schools more than anything else... I have never sought permission. Most schools have signs on the proprty stating the rules. Typically I see "No dogs," "No golfing," "Drug free zone," "No guns," etc. I have yet to see any signs that say anything about metal detecting. That being said I take excellent care of the property, cleaning up my holes nicely and carrying around a bag with the junk I've picked up. And the posts below are right, you'd have to be nuts to detect while school is in session. Early weekend mornings are the best; or during the day when it's cold and/or a little rainy.

i hit school yards almost every weekend, the only issue i have ever had is going to high schools that have some sort of extra-curricular activitys they might have on sat. i will usually skip that school for the day or come back later. high schools are good for sundays when they usually dont have anything going on.

We don't have the luxury of hunting school grounds in the UK, as they are private property, and usually fenced off.

As others have said, stay away from anywhere if there are kids around.

Personally, I stay off the playing areas of athletic fields, just detect on the sidelines.

Just got my first...

Sue B. Anthony dollar at a country school...

I also was just walking through the baseball field to get to another play area and I hit two spots with quarters and nickels in each!!!

so I am a big fan of schools.

Though i havent been kicked off but once, many states have laws against trespassing on STATE property. I treat them as delicate as a park just because kids will be running on them the next day... fill your holes.

I love the schools, but only go on weekends or when school is out. I don't go around if there are any activities, and I make certain to carry a trash sack and clean the yard as I go.

I agree about the weekends or after hours. I have found a lot of foreign coins at schools. Thank you god for show and tell!

I hit a gravel/rock area at the local high school (on a weekend) that was right by some vending machines, and picked up a handful of change in no time.

In Colorado schools are County property. No problems here. Go on weekends and evenings. You will always find more in the grassy fields than in the wood chips or playground area. Elementary schools are the most lucrative for me. If children show up to play after hours, give them the right-of-way. It's for them first.

95% school finds. Remember the "Grassy Areas" 3 months of Quarters, 9 months of rings.
