"whatzit???" Only find that is kind of interesting that I have yet to identify. Furniture/upholstery tack or ornament?? Horse tack ornament??? from bridal or saddle??? Not sure.
For a bit of history, the former owner of of my house had a hobby of making things out of metal. Forging, metal forming, etc. In the earlier days, the neighbor used to have horses too. He would also salvage metal parts and hardware from old funiture and such, taking them apart to use or melt down to make other things. But even my next door neighbor, who knew him for years was clueless as to what this was.
A bit tarnished, but still cleaned up fairly well. A magnet doesn't stick to it, and appears to have had shiny/polished finish.

it's starting to look that way

It's starting to look as if it's some sort of furniture finial. I've taken alot of furniture and stuff apart, but just haven't seen anything exactly like this myself. The former owner of my house used to take furniture and stuff apart too, to salvage the hardware and metal to make things.

no threads

No threads on the shaft, just tapers at the tip to a blunt point.
I doubt it is too old.
My house was built and purchased in 1950 by the former owner that I purchased the house from about 5 years ago. This item was found on the north side of the house, that used to be the garage, until he remodeled adding 20 feet to the house for a work shop. This is where 'Doc' made alot of his folklore art. 'Doc' was a doctor of chiropractic medicine, but in his earlier years, worked as a metallurgist for a manufacturing company, 'tinkered' in making his own solar collectors. (bits of scrap siding material are more plentiful than pop tops around here;) ), as well as melting metal, (globs of melted metal can also be found around here) to make fishing tackle, 'wind chimes' (see photo album) and such not to mention beer bottle caps and pop tops.

It does appear to me to be brass, possibly from a fireplace screen or something, (this house has two fireplaces, neither of which has original fireplace screens)
