What was your first hunt like and which detector were you using?

A guy I worked with introduced me to the hobby. I bought my first detector Whites IDX Pro off Ebay. He took me out to an old park and said that the old stuff was gone but there would be some fresh drops and maybe jewelry. The city had been working on the sidewalk and benches so I started there. First signal was a 1919 wheat.

My first hunt was a couple of years ago on the beach in NJ. I had just bought an AT Pro and the Garrett sand scoop. I headed straight down to the wet sand and found a signal. I stuck the scoop in the sand and stepped on the back to dig. The entire scoop crumbled under my foot (shell layer directly underneath) I was devastated. I turned right around and went back to my car. I was really upset and couldn’t figure out how to turn my machine off and it kept chiming in the back seat on the ride home. Regrouped and bought a different scoop. Next time out, I searched dry sand and found nothing but foil and hot rocks. Then, I started finding coins, keys, fishing equipment etc. On my 5th trip out, I found a tiny 14k diamond heart pendant and I was instantly addicted. I did not find another gold piece ( thanks Nox 800) until almost a year later but the thrill of the hunt is what kept me coming back.

my first time metal detecting was back in 1998 or 99 i went out with a friend to look for gold in the deserts of Arizona it was hot, cant remember what metal detector he had i know it was an old beep and dig, when we started searching i thought to myself what a big waste of time, we found nothing move ahead 10 years to 2009 my wife and i purchased a home in Ohio that was built in 1889 our house was on an almost acre and a half of land completely fenced in except for the front yard the fenced back yard was almost an acre of land with a six foot wooden fence around it, because of the age of the home we started doing research on our house and property found out two bank robbers were arrested in it we researched our property for almost a year we then decided to purchase two detectors one for my wife and one for myself so then we started researching detectors we ended up purchasing a AT Pro and a Xterra 705 we ended up selling that house in 2013 the whole time we were in Ohio I never detected any where other then my own yard for 3 years that yard was still giving up hidden treasures till the day we left Ohio my best find was not in the yard around the house though it was in a crawl space under the house that once you were in it you could literally stand up and swing a detector.

Nice thread idea! :goodidea:

Growing up, my big brother ("Torpedo") had a Tracker IV which he brought to playgrounds & beaches, and he'd let his two little siblings try it out. I was young enough that I really don't recall which time was my first. Later, though, the three of us were reintroduced to the hobby, and so in the spring of 2017 - even before the snow had disappeared - we bundled up and headed out to the yard for my first serious hunt. To our disappointment, we discovered that the ground was yet too hard for the shovel to pierce, so we gathered our gear and went inside... defeated but not deterred.

My first "huntable" hunt happened almost as soon as the earth had softened that year. At the time, my younger brother "Wolf-Dog" & I shared the Bounty Hunter BHJS, taking turns throughout the hunt. My finds from our back acreage that day? Rusty nails & screws, mostly; throw in a couple of .22 casings which possibly dated back to the past summer's target practice... but best of all, an afternoon of fun with my two brothers, and a happy start to a hobby that we would enjoy for years to come.
