What is your save date on nickles? I had several from 1942-1965 that I was not sure if I should keep or send to the bank. The 1942 is not a "war nickle" by the bo0k, but is WWII era so I want to keep it. Since the nickles are not like the dimes and quarters I am not sure if 1965 is a good cut off for nickles I want to save.

Any thoughts?

I've usually kept nickels made from 1958 or prior, to coincide with wheat cent production. Unless the nickel from 1959-1964 is in exceptionally good condition, it gets spent or put in the kids piggy bank.

Not a real strong reason but it's worked for me.

You could always check them for defects like double-die impressions and the like. I believe the earlier jefferson nickels (pre 1965) had a high amount of these and if you find one, it could be quite valuable. I don't have a website reference off-hand, but if you search for "double-die nickel" on Google I'm sure you'll find some site that lists the more valuable ones.

The only ones really worth saving are 1942-1945 which are 40% silver.... and 1949D with D stamped over S, 1945S with S over D, and 1955D with D over S.... other then that, I keep all nickels prior to 1968... they changed mintmark location in '68, so I think it's neat to have a nickel that's a bit different then the more recent ones...
