I bought a Garrett (original) propointer years ago. The first had issues after about a year and Garrett fixed it under warranty. It's been going strong since. I'd not hesitate to get another Garrett, but probably the carrot. I too started with a cheapie (Harbor Freight Centech)....The Propointer was such a breath of fresh air...highly recommend a good pinpointed. Expect to pay about $100 I say, but worth it.
I also learned how to increase the sensitivity for deeper targets by sliding my ring finger down the shaft of the Propointer until it was just starting to chirp...valuable trick. Not sure if it applies to other brands of pinpointers though.
