Hey all - newbie here - Garrett Ace 400 - I am in Northern West Virginia (Morgantown). Anyone close by or in the PA, OH, MD, VA, MD area looking to do some detecting? I have about 10 acres with the first house being there around 1934. I am finding a lot of holes with broken bottles, nails, random metal, also looks like some char as well. My detector is usually saying 8 inches + below - is this typical? Or possibly something has been buried below the pile? Haven't really found much with the detector - found a wheatie just sitting there though... Definitely could use any advice on settings, digging, maps to look at, etc. Really looking forward to getting some ground time with someone more experienced!

Eight inches could be normal, depends on the site. I wish I could help you on the Garret, but I have a Nokta Legend.

Welcome from Michigan! Considering the history that your area can claim, I'd bet there are plenty of targets on your 10 acres. Old stuff. It's there, you've got a lot of land to detect so best of luck and keep us posted.

Hi Marc! Congrats on your venture into detecting!! Not sure where you are in the Morgantown area, but I live north of Pittsburgh. I would be happy to shoot down there sometime to offer as much help as I can. I use a Garrett Ace Apex, which is probably somewhat similar to the Ace 400, so that might be helpful to you. Welcome from northern Michigan. I agree with Mark saying you have 10 acres of good hunting grounds to work on. If I were you, I would keep your location to yourself for a while until you have had the chance to really go over the area. You may be sitting on a honey hole and not know it.
