:spin: I found this 1902 nickel in the sidewalk strip in front of the old high school. It started to rain so I had to leave. Rob

The school was built in 1909. Here is a picture. Interestingly the school must be hunted a lot but they must use a high discrimination setting. I've got 45 nickels out of half of the front lawn so far. I've never found a silver coin, and only one other v nickel (1907). Rob

That's why I use as little discrimination as possible (especially on so called "hunted out" areas) and always dig everything that repeats. You'll get all the goodies other people miss. It annoys me to think I might be missing something good just because I'm too lazy to dig the trash.

45 nickels? Wow. How many were clad?

Interesting picture. Did you have to get special permission to hunt the school? My town considers most areas like that historical and strictly off limits.

Schools are public property in Illinois. As I said in the first post I've never found a silver coin which is why I believe it has been hit hard. All the coins are clad except the two v nickels. i've hunted this school for almost 2 years. My old park in town, 1800's, is off limits. Rob

Nice V nickel Rob! I hope you are able to pull some nice stuff there even though it seems cleaned out.

Very nice find. Nice picture of the school too. That tower on the front of the school kind of makes it look a bit like the old Joliet prison.

rcasi44, is that the school that had the old slide type fire escape on the other side? If so, my dad went there as a kid. I can't remember the location exactly, but he took my brother and I there to show us when we were kids. Had a story about waiting at the bottom to watch the girls slide down. Their skirts didn't make the slide very well. ;)

My nickel was red also when it came out of the ground. Must coins except silver are that dark red here in my area of Illinois. Rob
