Does anyone have any experience relating to how a detector would behave when over an old trash midden? We live in a 225 year old homestead property and I have found the original well/s and a few privies. Most certainly the house had at least one trash midden somewhere to the rear of the kitchen or cookery. I have located a suspect area in which I get strange intermittent almost ghost readings at varying depths... the whole area is hit and miss, the readings come and go and are very hard to nail down.
I started a hole for a reading of copper-misc at 2"-4" dug 6 just to be safe... nothing... detector over the hole still beeping like a fire alarm reading 4"-6" dug to 8" still nothing, detector still reading very strong over hole... I don't believe it is the hole itself, I'm used to that kind of false reading. I left it until morning when it light out before I dig to china...

"IF" there were a midden containing various and numerous metal objects I.E. tin cans, nails, pie plates etc. at a depth of say 18" to 25" spread over a 15 foot by 20 foot area would the detector pick up on the fact that this metal of various type and sizes was down there, or is it too deep.

Note: the soil in this area is rather damp most often due to it being a lower area which floods in heavy rains, so the detector should have a reasonably moist soil which might help with depth or confuse it.

My gut is telling my that the detector would sense "something" but not be able to determine what it was or how deep almost kind of teasing it with erratic readings... but perhaps someone out there has had an experience which might help...

Thanks , Don

may be a large iron target deep and the machine is unable to pin point the depth because the ground is saturated with the iron as it corrodes. that assuming your GB isnt off. in trash pits like that ive noticed my machine acting seemingly erratic but i usually wont have problems pin pointing a target that gives a good signal. your theory seems logical but ive not had the experience you discribed,if somthing gives off a good signal and still gives the same signal after if "disturbed" the soil the targets gonna be there. i almost bet your target is a large piece of iron. can you get a general idea of how big the target is when you switch to pin point or does the signal seem to go for ever and never dissipate?

Thanks for the help and input, I really appreciate it...

Well, I got down to about 12" and I have run into a buried beam of wood. I have no idea what it's doing there or how long it is but perhaps the reading are from some old nails on the underside or something. It's still beeping loud over the hole and saying there's an object there of size, but I have to get this 4x6 out of the way to see further... This could be a challenge, I hope it's just a foot or two long and not a 10 foot beam buried to hold the land back from erosion.

You caught my interest in this thread, I'll be watching to see what turns up! Hoping for good finds for you!

Big Iron Does That

I was recently getting a reading for a quarter, and thought by the signal it would be pretty close by. After digging 15-18 inches I hit an abandoned Narrow Gauge Railroad that was abandoned in 1920. Cool find, but can't take it to the bank or home!

A sifter and shovel certainly would clear up the question of what's down there. We have sifted many dumps along the old RR lines and I can tell you it's much more rewarding (finds wise) to sift than to detect. Steve in so az
