Was out in the garden fooling with settings for deeper targets, pushed the shovel into the ground and it gave way to a cavity filled with fluffy soil, something we dont have in this yard, just cracked hard clay, I thought it was interesting but ignored it, while fishing in the hole with my hand out comes what fist looked like a large worm, but soon relised it was a snake! Yikes! After I stopped getting that creepy crawling feel I put him in a jar for a photo to share, he/she goes back where I found it, because they like slugs
EDITED: SALEMSCOTT properly ID the snake as a LBS, see his post below, but in the mean time enjoy the video below, just in case someone runs into one .END OF EDIT
This is an Eastern worm snake, it has a sharp tail that feels like a sting on softer skin. Pic below.
Anybody have something crawl out of their dig holes?

Also a good link http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hyLd4kTye1g

Couldn't stop myself (having read the title) and now I feel all 'icky'. Hate snakes but do let the non-venomious live. Poisonious ones...never! Thanks for sharing just the same...now, I'll go shower until the 'icky' is gone.
;)

Glad he went back where ya got 'em! Never seen that species before, but his patterns look cool!

Yep, I was kind of feeling icky too, I havent finished retreving the target..by what I felt of the fluffy soil.... I'd say there is a bunch more. These are like the tiny ring neck that come out in the dark, so no night detecting for me. Ill recover the target soon so they have time to fix their den back before it gets too cold, It lives because I hate slugs even more than snakes!

It turned colors from the time I first caught him till time I took picture, Im starting to wonder if I miss ID him, he came out of the side of the hole, and became darker with time, a mini brown snake? At first he had no markings. But his pinkish creme belly turned more creme and than the markings got darker, he was out of hole more than 12 hours and less than 24.
I must of stressed him, he was about 5.5inches long, Id say its too late for baby snakes in the wild.?

Hi Jo ann, where are you located? It's what's referred to in the snake world as an LBS...little brown snake. It looks like a few different possibilities and if it's a young snake it may look nothing like it's adult counterpart. It reminds me of a DeKay brown snake, which is a common snake to find around a yard, even found in some city locations. Black racers also have a similar coloration when they are young. Being an admirer of snakes I'm happy to hear you set it free. Meet Minikin, an old gal I used to know and shared a bedroom with. She's was an 8 1/2 foot Columbian Redtail Boa (BCC).

Dug up many and many of these snakes in VA. Lots of common earth snakes. They bother me none. I kill none. God has gaven each one a purpose.

I however wear snake boots and of course don't want to get bit. But I believe in karma. The more you kill the more your chance of getting bit. Maybe not true for some of you but yes karma comes back

I use to kill hornets, wasps and jackets with spray and they all have come back to get me. I get stung a lot.

YIKES@ Minikin!
Please dont tell me this snake is going to grow into a huge snake! We had huge black snakes in WV, they loved outhouses. Im pretty ok with snakes if they are outside but not copperheads and rattlers, the snake I found today was in Ohio.

Karma works two ways, like if the hornets build in my shed, that is mean and karma will get them.

I'd call it a brown ground snake

I've not seen a worm snake, but the pics I've seen show no noticeable head shape to the snake; more like a true earthworm in appearance.
We have quite a few small ground snakes here in central NC. Brown ones and gray ones. I've seen them between 5 and 10 inches long. They are beneficial and harmless. Please do not harm them.
I've always had an interest in snakes and always enjoy finding them.

You are right, I didnt ID it correctly, and the snake is safe back in the hole.
