I felt left out with everyone always posting their finds so I thought I would add some of mine. Last month I bought a new Tesoro Cibola to replace my very old RadioShack VLF. I've only taken it for one real test drive since it has been too hot and dry to really go out much.

I was bored and created a blog to start to keep track of my finds. Let me know what you think.

Fine-Tuning the Cibola

I own a Cibola, as well as a Silver umax. I bought the Silver first, and found LOTS of good relics with it(love it). I took the Cibola out relic hunting, and didn't think it did as well as the Silver. Air-testing, the Silver out-performs the Cibola, also. According to the reviews, the Cibola should out-perform the Silver. I have read that the Cibola needs to be super-tuned for optimum performance, using the threshold knob along with the sensitivity. Question.......How do you perform this adjustment? Anybody know? I was wondering if maybe my Cib had a problem.......maybe it's me??

I really don't have a good baseline for comparison, the Cibola definitely out preformed my old RadioShack hands down. I have heard great things about the Cibola, (hence me buying one) and mine seemed to perform well. Super-Tuning is basically done by just cranking up the sensitivity and threshold while discriminating, there are instructions on it in the manual. http://www.tesoro.com/index-manuals.html
I personally didn't have much luck with "Super-Tuning" the ground was extremely trashy where I was at and I was getting too much chatter. Most of the coins I found; I had the Threshold set in the middle, Sensitivity set on about 7 and the Discrim set just above pull tab, I dug very little trash and you could definitely hear the difference between a good coin tone and a weak trash tone. I spent a lot of time doing air tests until I got use to all of the Cibolas settings before heading out. (Hope this Helps)

Hi Boyz and Girlz,
Its about two or three weeks that I have not posted anything (reason : was busy with one or two things that are directly concern with metal detecting). OK mimereader you seem to have some problems to fine tune the Cibo, OK here are the settings I use when I go fishing for coins...
Threshold about max (but don't forget to press on the pinpoint buttom when turning the Threshold knob )
I set the Sensitivy to nine.
Discrimination is set between Iron and 5 cents (let's say closer to Iron)
And you are ready to go my friend.
I love this Baby (but she does not like gold, that's another story...)

Tuning

Thank you folks for the advice. When I took the Cib out, I had the sensitivity on 8, and don't know what the threshold was on. The machine seemed to perform better when the coil was swung higher off the ground???....weird, I know. I have been digging since 1982, and have never had one to perform better when held "higher" off the ground. So I figured it must be an adjustment situation. I really think I'll enjoy it once I get it tuned correctly. Good Luck digging!

:?: and what happens when you get closer to the ground. I think that you shold remove the coil cover ( very painful for the fingers specially when there are LOTS of dirt. I use to soak it it hot very hot water to be able to remove the cover ) and give it a good clean.

Closer to the ground, the audio is more "broken", or not as stable over target. I don't have a coil cover on the Silver, so you may be onto something there. This Cib is new, so there are not any dirt particles under the coil cover.

Do you use headphones ? I so I think you got a problem with it. Also do some test with different Items and hear the different tones it make. Example for junks it gives more chipping and broken sound.

A couple of things I have noticed. If there are two targets a few inches apart I seem to get a lot of loud broken sounds and it makes pinpointing a little difficult. Also if a strong object like a silver quarter is lying on top of or close to the surface both the outer coil and the inner coil seem to tone when passing over, so if you are swinging fast it makes some very broken sounds.

When discriminating some trash targets will give off a lot of short broken chirps.

What type of ground are you hunting on? Trashy ground with lots of foil/cans or ground that is mineralized will cause some broken sounds. I have also noticed that it gets chirpy if hunting a steep hill side.

Since mine is new as well I was worry sometimes that it has issues. But I have been digging plenty of coins out of an area completely filled with trash metal so I am trying to give it some more time and try to get out to some more areas.

Hope some of this helps.
Keep up with the feed back, I am sure we can all learn from each other.

Yes, I have always used headphones. The only time I took the Cib out, I did find some decent items, but at this particular location(for Civil War relics), the Silver does better. I'm not quite ready to accuse the machine, just yet. I am going to play with the adjustments a little. I'm assuming that the Cib is going to make the same audios as the Silver, or please enlighten me on this if I'm wrong. Most all machines that I have used in the past will give a 'broken' sound for less-desireable targets(with some exceptions). I have used mixed-audio and multi-toned machines in the past, but prefer less complicated machines. Thanks.

Well I see now what the big problem... Hear my story it happen about 3 or 4 weeks ago. My elder brother ask me if I could find his daugter lost gold pendant. There was lots and lots of trash where she has supposed to have lost it, a real nightmare, Cib for the 1st time became erratic LOTS of breaking sounds... I ended with my finds bag FULL of trash as if I was MDing with a PI machine in a trash yard.... I reduce discrimination to MIN cos this baby does not like gold at all.
But I think that's not a big problem, all you need is some good practice, take several items and make a good back yard test and listen carefully to what Cib is telling you, most junks (broken sounds) and good items (smooth dig it baby sound) will be different. Only problem is that some gold items (purhaps too small ) can give no sound or broken sound .

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to be off for 4 days starting tomorrow, so I plan on digging somewhere. Might take Cib for a walk.

Air-test comparison between the Cibola and Silver

I took a quarter out in the yard this evening, and air-tested both machines. After playing with the controls on the Cib(threshold about 3/4, sensitivity on 9, disc. on 5 cent), compared with Silver sensitivity on approx 9, disc 5 cent, the Cibola air-tested with good audio at 10", compared with 7 inches on the Silver. The Cib behaved as it should. Perhaps the ground mineralization was out-of-whack when I experienced that "glitch" before. I was impressed with the difference. I think I'll be using Cib a little more, now.

I love this baby. Happy hunting minereader :)

Thank y'all. I can't wait for this dry, cement-like ground to get enough rain for me to actually USE the Cibola again. If only I had a jackhammer.................................Good luck hunting to y'all, also.
