I went to a large grocery chain, will not name them but they want to become nations largest. Anyway on way out i see a handfull of change in reject slot in coinstar machine. Prob 25 coins. I scooped them and immediately a young female clerk come over and said they belong to the store. I said they are rejected and left by previous owner but she said they still belong to the store and she held out her hand . A second clerk said same thing. So i handed them to her and she took them into the cashier/office room and came back out. Said her boss said yes store property on agreement. They were not nasty and were courteous, although i believe wrong. The coins were mainly foriegn to me, canadians, a peso, some were pennies with crud. Nothing looked silver right off. Maybe some euros. Nothing gave me an ah ha or heartburn moment. I did not want to cause a scene, risk my job nor reputation.
Took me off gaurd. This was a lot of coins than normally see left.
Sooooo for future trips i have a sandwich bag of awful, holey, eat up corroded zinc that the US Mint would prob throw in garbage. I will deposit the once useless now valuable coins in the machine, and retreive them from the reject along with anything left in the slot beforehand. No fuss to be made. And see what i have when i get home.
Had there been a handfull of silver, well we might have had a argument but i know there are cameras too and is it worth a scene or charge if it is even possible like a theft or disorderly or get banned from store? Doubt it would happen, but i think my stealth idea would be best. And yes i do roll up the bad zincs in the middle of rolls going back to mint. We paid for them.
Anyone had this happen?

dixie-digger-57 : this discussion , about coin-star rejects, has come up before on past threads. Discussing the legal status. Yet none of those thread discussions ever actually involved a store *truly* coming up and saying : "Give it to me", haha

I believe the store is right : The rejects either belong to : 1) the original customer, who forgot to scoop them up, 2) The coinstar company, or 3) the store who rents/leases that space to the coinstar company. Legally, you would be on the loosing end of that, if it ever came up for a legal question.

So I have jokingly accused persons, who took coinstar rejects, as being lawless thieves ! But yours is the first post I've ever seen , of any store that actually cared one iota about anyone taking coins out of the reject slot. This is an oddity for sure !

Wow, that's nuts. Glad that's never happened to me, seems most around here don't care or even notice. My son found a 1963 Rosie in our local store's yesterday. I would just pretend I was using the CS I guess and say those are my rejects ;) I dunno, or challenge them to an arm wrestling match - whoever wins keeps the coins :D

You win some you lose some. I let the kids hit the coinstars, they'll be really disappointed if this ever happened to them!

Well, you guys now realize what dixie-digger-57's post means, don't you ? It's an "ominous headline" of : "Intense legal consequence", that could lead to jail, tickets, etc... Right ?

So what you all need to do now, is go to the store's upper management, and GET PERMISSION to take the coins from the coinstar reject slot.

If you doubt that this is necessary, all you need to do is read dixiedigger57 opening post again. Read it and weep ! Don't be a lawless miscreant ! Make us proud and start groveling !!

Yea Tom i learned pick your battles. This was not worth it. It was not the dime in the parking lot. No not Walmart but i think one of the biggest Grocers in the nation. I avtually asked again and was told by another clerk sometimes they let it go if a couple cents. I know these girls took it in the counting office. And nothing in pile was valuable sooo.. water under the bridge. Felix pennies to the rescue next time.

Coinstar's response below. MEH... Finders keepers. No different than finding a quarter on the floor of the store. I bet that the store clerks have been scooping up the change for themselves. But I love your solution, dixiedigger!

“Hello,

Thank you for your e-mail. To answer your question, the coins that are left in the reject slot belong to the last customer that used the kiosk and in the event of finding them, the store personnel should be informed, and coins should be left with them.

Thank you,

You are now the latest member of the : "No one cared UNTIL you asked" club. Welcome :friends:

sorry dixie you had that experience, regardless of proprietary issues, it's still rather petty for management to require its clerks to ride down on its customers for picking a few coins left by others. Save some change, lose your customers...not smart.

That is exactly the idea I was going to post someday - if you are shy about Coinstar-grabbing what about carrying a couple bucks in change to feed it if you see good stuff in the reject tray?

I agree with your plan Dixiedigger , sometimes the store policy on certain things is just plain " Ridiculous " how rich do they think their going to get on the " rejects " Good luck to you !

Been a miscreant for many years. Have never once been asked to have the coins back. Here's the trick for the rest of you heathens. Once you pull them out of the reject bin, immediately put them in your pocket. If, someone tells you that the change is not yours but the stores, say, " OK, well they are in my pocket with my change, as soon as you tell me exactly what I've removed, I will be glad to hand it over". Good luck store! Say goodbye and have a nice day.
