I have a 25yr old Spectrum XLT. When I turn on and balance, getting it ready to hunt, it just starts to beep all over the place. Even when I hold coil in the air. It's not electrical interference or high mineral content in soil. It worked fine last year. Any ideas??

Happened to me, turned out the coil was shot. Can you get your hands on another coil to test ?

Yep I have read this as well and it usually turns out to be the coil. Look to see if there is any cracks in the coil. If it is a two pin connector check it with a multimeter to see what the resistance is. Usually there is quite a bit of resistance across the windings. Compare to a good working coils resistance and if it is a lot lower there is probably a short in the windings. In other words if the working coils resistance is 120 OHMS and yours is 2 OHMS, boom! shorted coil.
