Sometimes... ya just have to sift. Our 1775 house was built by a Methuen Mass. regiment Minute Man. Thus when I am working around the house and I move any soil I always sift even if I use the detector first. Here are a few early Rev War or Possibly early 1800s buttons I sifted that the detector missed. The backs are simple loops as is common on most early buttons.

The 4th image is a button with a molded glass image. I have not seen anything like this though I know early buttons were made by craftsman of all trades. Perhaps someone has seen something like it before???
