Starting off the year with a bang Dave.. That CT button is awesome.. Nice finds Bro...

I knew without a doubt you'd be out this weekend. Sure was warm enough.
Great finds...WTG!

Excellent

Heaveymetalnut, great job!

Here in Virginia, military buttons are far more common due to the amount of troops that were here during the war. So we get a fair amount of experience cleaning them. They come out of the ground with various stages of ground action which sometimes detracts from the true beauty of what the button could be. What I mean is, the button is sometimes masked with heavy green oxidation or other contaminates which can carefully be removed. It will often reveal a great button. But it has to be cleaned properly.

Looking at your photo, it looks like a lot can be done to this button which should make you pretty happy. A little caution, it looks like the shank and a tad of the back is broken off and the button is filled with dirt. This may make the button a tad fragile; so handle carefully.

It's up to you but I would soak it in pure Ammonia and after a couple of minutes, rinse it off and "GENTLY" massage it with a soft tooth brush. It may take several soakings but I think you'll be very happy with the end results. Just be careful and don't over do it.
When you are satisfied with the results, coat the button with Vaseline and melt it into the button with a hair dryer. After the button looks wet, wipe the excess Vaseline off with a cloth and Woola!

A lot of relic hunters here in Virginia mock the common old Eagle buttons. At one time, you could dig a dozen of them or more in a day. Not me, I have a great collection of them and treat everyone as it was a rare Confederate button. I've taken, these so called common buttons, and made a really appealing collection out of them. They look impressive because I take time and properly clean them.

I always clean my buttons in this manner and they come out great. Just don't get distracted and forget it in the Ammonia solution. A long term soaking can damage it. But carefully used, this cleaning process will make you smile.

Great job on your finds and congratulations on the two GW buttons you previously dug. I hope that you and your digging buddies have a great New Year.

Thanks John for all that info.
i just used some warm soapy water and a toothbrush.and puts a dab of vaseline on it already.
i'll have to get some amonia and try your method.the inside is definitely filled with a cementlike sandy/dirt. i didn't want to mess with it but i may tinker with it now.using a small pin perhaps to try to loosen the dirt filled inside.
will the amonia take off the green corrosion?
Dave

Nice job Dave! Looks like it did get pretty muddy for ya! How were the digging conditions as I'm dying to get out & dig some goodies! Did you use the new PP on the hunt? HH!!
