REV WAR officers button

If that button could only talk.
Question...would they sew a 5 hole wooden button onto a uniform and then crimp the metal cover/cap over it?

Hi,

The Officer's pattern bone-backed version of these Continental USA buttons are rare enough. To 'dig' one in such spectacular condition is phenomenal. This button is Museum quality. It belongs in the Smithsonian.

It's finds like this that attracted me to the forum. Each discovery like this contributes to the general knowledge base that is still somewhat lacking and incomplete. There are so many authentic Rev War period military and naval buttons that have not yet been given the stamp of approval or acceptance by the button gods and do not appear in the button Bible. I'm not a slave to it.

Of course this particular button enjoys a pedigree that is beyond dispute.
I'd rather have this button than a new X-Box or a $500 bottle of French wine. I hope the present owner appreciates and enjoys his very special, historic and patriotic treasure!

If this button ever appears at auction, it will start with a minimum reserve of 10k. I'm saving my pennies in the event...lol

Regards,

JD

Would have thought it would have made your best finds list by now.

The mud it was in most likely had no oxygen at the depth it was... I found one of my oldest gold rings there from the mid 1800's... its strictly a pulse beach not worth even bothering to use a VLF type detector there... I didn't take you guys there either  It holds hessian buttons have come out of there, pewter USA buttons as well a bow mounted deck cannon was found there not by a guy detecting by walking along the shore years ago... musket balls, 3 ringers something went on there... OBN isn't into relics that was another reason I didn't bring you guys there...
