Found a pewter musket ball yesterday at an area settled in the 1740's. First pewter musket ball I've ever dug and at first wasn't sure until it started flaking while cleaning and notice it didn’t have the weight of an ordinary lead ball that size. Some research on line shows these were made during the Rev War due to a shortage of lead at that time. A few web pages note that a pewter statue of King George III in New York was melted down for musket balls and made over 40,000 of them. Also another site mentions pewter musket balls found at Ft. Rice in NJ made out of pewter flatware at the fort. So any thoughts on this appreciated.
