Other hobbies besides metal detecting

As a hobby, I restored old cars back in the day I could. Mostly fords, and mostly Mustangs. I would drive around and find an old one rusting away in a field, buy it, restore it enough to make it driveable and sell it to someone wanting to do a full restore. I did a full restore on some of mine. I physically had to stop about 8 years ago.

Here is a picture of just a few of the Mustangs. I used the money to buy the high end ponies.

Didn't plan on using this machine for stuff like this but have been on a roll with etched pics, this one on white plexiglas so it looks good as is but really pops with backlight, am working on other breeds

Here are some AI generated images, the goal here is to find a system to turn them into 3D models and carve them out, which would be incredible and a huge game changer since a quality 3D model can take many hours, days even, to produce while these take seconds. Should be no problem to turn these into height maps, complication is having enough detail to carve them out as they look. Ironically my problem so far is too much detail, they are so intricate that its not feasible to machine them, and the alternative is the other extreme.

Note than the AI images are not perfect, you'll often see weird blobs, missing fingers ect Not much info about turning an AI generated image into a masterpiece, if anyone has messed with this let me know. I may need to upgrade my software, which will cost $1,000's, to get the results I am after.

Can they be 3d printed? not sure how difficult it would be to convert them to the appropriate file type...
Or is there an AI that can do that?

certainly feasible to print, I got a printer not long ago but am not up to speed on it and am concentrating on my CNC router, I would like to see one of these in wood, then I can think about plastic. I have the feeling something like this would easily take a day or 2 to print with most printers, and for something like an 8x10, whereas a router could knock it off in hours. But sure, it is possible, you'd just have to get it into the right format for the printer slicer software, and tweak it from there.

I actually gave up other hobbies to focus 100% on metal detecting lol. I retire in about 6 .months.
I never focus 100% on anything, perhaps both a blessing and a curse.
Life would be pretty boring for me if all I did was dig holes. I am a creator, I have a strong urge to make that which is not there [or available at walmarts/amazon] I have ideas spinning in my head all day long, only a fraction see the light of day. Some exceed my expectations, most not. If I was a baseball player I'd have far more strikeouts than hits. Best ideas come when you are not specifically trying to think of them, they fall from the sky, hit you on the head and fall in your lap. They are subconscious, and if you don't recognize them for what they are and catalog them in your brain fairly quick, you'll be apt to forget them within the hour, never to be revisited.

I am mixed about AI, almost like cheating but as with everything else, the cream will rise to the top in the process of creating useful objects with it. Its one thing to have a nice cool picture, but then what ?

Years ago, I was a motorhead. I started out doing all kinds of automotive work, then just focused on engines. With the advent of computerized everything, it just didn't seem fun anymore and I just got away from it. I was an active radio amateur operator for a long time, but a nagging wife (now long divorced from) and HOA restrictions on antennas has curbed my enthusiasm.

Now, if I REALLY had my choice, I'd be shooting the game of American trap. Where I live now, there aren't very many opportunities, but it's still my passion. Mding came about since my proximity to the beach. I was out on the beach year round 3-4 times a week, and it just seems like a natural progression.

MD is cool no doubt about it, I especially like beach hunting and do pretty well at it, having near exclusive access to some pretty good locations [and have also found silver coins there as well] Makes for a good day for me and often my dog, I like hunting tot lots at night too.

I especially like beach hunting
The Grand Strand of SC is a tourist Mecca. This time of year, the beach is picked over. After people have had the opportunity to loose a seasons worth of stuff, I think it will pick up. I've been chasing the outgoing tide and walk in the wash. The tides that bring in shells also (hopefully) brought in some new goodies.

KT is going to buck the trend in this thread, simply because His Majesty now enjoys hoarding silver half dollars, collecting and photographing fluorescent minerals, AND collecting postcards from His Royal Home Town, Hot Springs National Park. The Royal Postcard collection is fairly large, containing about 1400 different ones that date from the early 1900s to the 1950's when colored photochrome cards came into existence. It is fun to look at the evolution of the Bathhouses and the downtown area through the years. And KT was even able to help the National Park by supplying several pictures of the old 1920s Bandstand from the 1920s and 30s, that was torn down in the 40s. They used these pictures to create via Computer a 3-D architectural image of the long lost building, so that when they get a grant for the Park, they can reconstruct it accurately. KT even has a couple of real photo postcards of himself at 2 years old and his Royal middle brother when he was 18 years old! Quite interesting. Because the area was a Park for so long, it is estimated that over 3,500 pcs were published and available to the public. It used to be a hobby to pick up postcards from where one visited in the USA. Check over on eBay by putting your hometown name in the search engine, followed by the letters pc and see what you find! HA HA

I can empathize completely, although I tend to focus 100%, learn the basics and sometimes get into the intermediate level of knowledge and/or skill, then lose interest and move on... Something about that point where diminishing returns makes the increments of advancement almost invisible when there is something else to learn the basics of on the next page.

I've tried to force myself to stick with something long enough to master it but it just gets... boring. Much more enjoyment in learning things that are directly applicable. MDing so far is great, and I have always gotten satisfaction in finding that which was lost. Fishing has been for a long time too because fresh fish tastes good.

No carving yet but I did manage to do one of the AI models on my fiber laser.
Used a bit too much power so it looks a little washed out, but very nicely detailed.

Some really talented people on this site. My hobbies are a bit different from some of the rest I do paranormal investigating, sports cards, photography and I do like to draw at times. I've been doing paranormal for 14 years now, I know it's not for everyone but I enjoy it.

I've upped my quality, and finally made something other than zombies with babes. IS a little cropped, I need to tune my lens badly

Nailed the leather in this one, these of course are only black & white, the varying shades of gray between the 2 are what gives them [the illusion of] depth. The other one is nice but slightly washed out, I do these in 2 passes and apparently, I used too much power on the 2nd pass, obliterating some of the details.
