I just pulled out my old Garrett Groundhog again, put in new batteries and turned it on. Apparently there is something wrong with the speaker. The dial is working fine and batteries show full power. I can hear a clicking noise when I sweep the coil over metal...but no other sounds. All the connections are tight. I looked inside with a flashlight and did not see any obvious problems. I also turned it upside down and shook it...believe it or not, that is suggested in the manual.

It was working fine about two years ago.

Before I go through the hassle of packing it up and sending it to Garrett, I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions.

Thank you.

Seems like it could be a bad connection in the speaker wires. Could be a relatively simple fix if you're comfortable opening it up and are good with electronics.

Good with electronics? Well...I have multiple sets of small screwdrivers for opening things up. I have a multimeter with a set of instructions on how to use it. So, no I'm not really good with electronics, but I am going to try anyway. Thanks.

Go for it, what's the worst that can happen

Ouch! Actually I was hoping someone would tell me to just open up the graphulator and give 'er a half turn to the left and it should be good as new!

I fixed it!! I unscrewed three screws on the top panel and pulled it back carefully. I saw a tiny copper wire going into the speaker cone and I touched it with the tip of a screwdriver. I put the batteries back in and waved my wedding ring finger under the coil and BEEP!!

This proves my oft repeated maxim. To wit: When something is barely not working, take it apart and put it back together again and very often - it will start working. Kind of like rebooting a computer.

I have impressed a lot of people with this trick.
