New forum, what happened?

Once I get the old forum working on my PC, I'll post about it and rescue some of your pictures.
It's not a quick process but I will get to it at some point.
Hi Vlad I do have a suggestion the edit feature, one of the things I have never liked on Friendly is you are limited by time as to how long it is to edit your post, when I make a post I will go back and read what I am replying or what I have posted and with the edit feature you only have 5 minutes to edit or it will not allow you to edit

is there a way you can make it so you are not limited as to how long you can edit a reply or post, with out adding a delete of a reply or post ???

There is, but it creates more problems, for example: a member posts something, another member calls him out on it, OP edits his posts and says he never said that.... this turns into a fight.... OP get pissed and starts deleting all his posts rendering all the replies useless...

Not saying you would ever do such a thing but it is standard on most forums.

well I am not saying to let users delete their post, just give us all the ability to edit for longer than 5 minutes, say 30 minutes to an hour, friendly is the only forum I venture to that limits how long you are able to Edit, treasure net, finds, detector prospector i can literally go back and edit any of my post days and weeks later

I do understand your concerns but an extra 25-45 minutes would even work for us slower folks that did not type things correctly to begin with LOL

some times it takes my old mind five minutes to just realize man that sounds wiierd what I typed LOl

The time limit for editing posts is 2 hours on this new forum. That should be plenty of time to correct mistakes
and I do agree with you 2 hours should be plenty but that is not what I was seeing, the edit feature was there on my last reply to Vlad and I clicked it did my editing because I wanted to add something but when I clicked the submit a pop up came up that said I had exceeded the edit time limit that had no been 2 hours

I just checked and it says 120 minutes, perhaps the system has not has not updated the new settings yet.
I would give it another try tomorrow and report back.
We're learning the new forum as we go, so please bear with us folks!

Yeah I noticed that things were getting testy with some testers.
How about post counts and join dates, lost to time ? Not very important obviously, just something used to seeing, everyone looks so generic without it.
If you hoover mouse over, or click on members name it shows join date, last log in date, total posts made, and has link to PM member. You can also follow or ignore a member from that screen.

I checked the settings again, and there was one that said "Edit your own thread," which was turned off. So I turned it on. Maybe that was the problem?? I don't know why that would make a difference because you are not the thread starter.
Anyway, It would be nice if everything worked "right out of the box." But on the internet, it seems that is never the case.

Thank you for providing a forum where we can talk about all things metal detecting, share our adventures, and post the neat things we find.
I know it is not easy sometimes keeping the forum running, dealing with members, and footing the cost of it all.
I remember back when this forum was started ... and why it was started.
It is very much appreciated.
The new forum looks great ... good job!
Hope you can keep it up and running for many years to come.

thank you Carol might have been a hold out from the old site

Are our animated GIFs no longer supported? It's been so long, I don't know if I can track down my source file, is there a way I can DL my avatar from here so I can UL a less boring frame?

I'm pretty sure my avatar GIF file carried over to the new version, since the first frame is showing. Just doesn't play. Appreciate the file rescue when time permits.

Wow. That's a lot of my work down the drain. BTW my avatar now shows "GLASSHOPPER1" then under that "955". smh.
I believe Vlad & Carol are working on getting an album system carried over now.

As far as your username not displaying properly, it could be your font size of aspect ratio of your device, because it is showing up fine for me:

Your GIF file is intact. Click on your avatar to go to your account, then click on the avatar again (same as selecting this link: https://metaldetectingforum.com/data/avatars/o/34/34779.jpg). The file will display with animation as you expected.

Images displaying by your posts and on your account page are loaded using slightly different URLs:
They differ only by the single lettered path element - 'm' vs. 'l' vs. 'o'. I can only guess those letters stand for medium, large, and original. Wish I could tell you more, but that's about all I got.

And it sounds like switching the albums over is not an easy job. @Vlad, I appreciate the time & energy that will be going into this effort tomorrow!

@GLASSHOPPER1955: Yes, like Wolf-Dog said, your username looks right on my device, as well. :waytogo:

Fullbattery,
Thanks for sleuthing this out! I did NOT want to hit "edit", and even less upload something new, then I'm pretty sure the photo/file recovery would be the only option. Got the 3 jpgs and my animated GIF downloaded, thank you!

Just out of curiosity, how many forums have been combined under this new software "umbrella"?
I ask, because I'm seeing a lot of new names that weren't on the old board, and the post count has increased dramatically since the "collapse" of the old board.

Roger, this forum is separate and independent from any other forum that may be running using the same software.

Thank you for all the work! A much improved experience when I come to visit.
