nice hunt you had there...congrats!

and like heavy said...be careful. that could be a fuse hole in the cannonball, and that means it could be a live round .

Frank i got a reply back about your cannonball here is his quote>

That cannon ball should not be allowed to dry out until you figure it out. Consult an expert.

:lol::lol:..I was thinking the same thing. You put on some summer vacation :roll:pounds there

Sweet job Frank! And we thought it was already hit up pretty good! Guess that guy that we talked to never went back & hit it up.

Keep that ball in a bucket of water to see if the crud will loosen up & you can dump the powder out.

Later,
Roger

frank another reply concerning the cannon ball.

Hey, I've found a few like that from the same time period and saved the gun powder inside for weighing and documenting. Chances are the gun powder is gone or mixed with mud however there is a chance that it may still be inside. place the ball in a pale of water halfway or all the way if you don't care about the gun powder and get thin strong stick that is wet and slowly dig the dirt out if you are hitting something harder than mud or dirt stop immediately however to me the fuse is gone. keep working at the dirt plug and allow the water to enter the hole, within a couple seconds of soaking pour out the dirt and add more water and empty again, repeat until empty... I've defused some for a museum and you should'nt have a problem. let me know if have anymore questions

again chances are the fuse is long gone but if he hits something hard or sees metal (likely brass) that may be driven down then cease and have a professional defuse it, do not store around people... again this one looks straight forward and simple but you can never be to safe!

I know Steve, and someone else who also dug one and it was just dirt inside. Hopefully that will be the case here.

Frank Iron Patch sent me this pic & this is his quote

Looks like a Rev War era grenade. But doesn't look exactly round? I'd put it in water and brush the dirt away from the circle a little to determine if it's a fuse or just a ball full of dirt.
Iron Patch can you post that pic?

yep, here it is. Actually reading it this time looks like it's probably from artillery so maybe not considered a grenade.
