Monogrammed Silver Spoon

I found a very nice monogrammed silver spoon yesterday and looking for some help with the monogram ID. This was found at a location that has a traceable history dating back to the 18th century with a homestead, and I have surnames of property ownership from that era to the 1900's. The spoon says "Sterling" along its shoulder. From what I read online, the "Sterling" mark was put on all Sterling Silver items after the 1880's, so this seems to narrow down the vintage of the spoon somewhat. When looking at the spoon with the bowl facing upward and handle downward, the monogram looks like the letter "D". With the bowl facing downward and handle facing upward, the monogram letter I can't figure out...so a few questions with spoons: 1) what year range did the word "Sterling" come into usage with spoons if what I read online is not accurate; 2) do spoons and utensils typically have the monogram lettering facing upward or downward, or does that change by era; and 3) what do you think this monogram letter is? Thanks.
