Lead sinkers!

If it has value to someone keep and sell. Lead sinkers have value, so do sunglasses in good shape, and cell phones working or not. Everything of value isn't going to be gold or silver. AND contrary to a certain cranky moderator's belief...even a lot of Felix pennies have value! :p

I'm not cranky... I'm a realist and those eaten up crusty pennies are worthless and if I find them they go right in the trash. Have a good night lol...

I keep them, but I fish. Normally I don't use the types of sinkers that I find, but I have molds and melt them down and make the sinkers I want. I'm ALWAYS on the lookout for lead. It used to be impossibly easy to find all over, but it's getting tougher and tougher.

Thanks for the info, Travis. I don't fish... But I think I know someone who does... I'll ask them.

Thanks!

I love finding good fishing weights. Each nice surf weight is like finding a buck or two. My fishing buddies and I are well stocked. I'd rather find a sinker than a quarter any day.

Muskrat, if you're into fishing, then you know that fishermen are indeed paying more than a quarter each for larger fishing weights. So what you and I should do, is stand outside that fisherman supply store "The Tackle Box", in north salinas, in black trench coats and dark sunglasses. As each patron approaches the door, we pigeon hole them offering to sell fishing weights at a discount. Ok ?

Heck, for that matter, all those fishing lures I simply throw away, are selling for several bucks each to the poor sap who buys them brand new :?:

I knew a guy, who did the Santa Cruz boardwalk dry sand, every Monday morning, as a retired guy for exercise, for many years. And he saved all the toy cars (matchbox, hotwheels, etc....) that he found . Stuff that I would have just thrown away. But every 6 months or so he'd go to the flea market there, and be selling them for $1 each EASY ! Mom's with their little kids, who are accustomed to paying $5 each for them in the toy store, had NO PROBLEM paying $1 each for them. It made me think twice about chucking the better shape toy cars in the trash. But alas, I'm too lazy to spend all morning with a card-table at the flea market, so they still get tossed in the trash

I put my Felix crusty half eaten up pennies in my potted plants and out door plants the zinc is good for them , going to drop some recent found ones in my tomatoes today.

I always keep lead, i just put them in a big empty laundry detergent bottle i have just for lead and sell a few times a year. Lead adds up quick weight wise...

See Craig they have value!!!

Benefits of zinc in plants

Image: supplemania.net
Zinc is needed for the creation of the plant growth hormone auxin and for creation of the green chlorophyll and cytochrome pigments. It also has a role in formation of enzymes and carbohydrates, regulation of starches and proper root development. Zinc also helps plants assimilate to cold temperatures across the growing season.

Find

Enough to never have to buy sinkers for fishing , you find lead , your in a good spot , last week I passed by a fishing couple on the beach , when I passed them on return the guy said he lost his wedding ban , but he found it , they were drinking cold beer , I sad wouldn't have been a problem , I would at that time found it for him for a cold beer , so for sinkers , yes I keep them , I have a qt. Now with fishing boxes blown out, happy hunting .

Sinkers Have Usually Been Good to Me.

I like hunting any beach area that has a congregation of heavy items like sinkers. These areas are a pain but have brought me quite a bit of gold.

Years ago, I used to give my sinkers to a retired fellow who did a lot of surf fishing. All I asked is that he call me when the beach had nice cuts or areas that deposited heavy gravel.

That is what I call "thinking out of the box"! I am off to make some fisherman friends!

Save and sell or recycle. When I was in CA, I would find 20-40 pounds of sinkers a year. Put ad on Craigslist and sold for $1/lb instantly.
Never throw away lead. Recycle anything you can.

I have a bucket full of the. when i need a certain sinker for my fresh water fishing i melt the ones i have found and cast the ones i need. IF I should find far more than i need will sell them/. Been casting leas sinkers and lead bullets for a lot of years and i aint dead yet. Casual handling of lead is not a real problem. But it is advisable to do your lead melting outside.

Correct me if I'm wrong , but this is only true when :

1) talking about wet-sand erosion hunting. When mother nature groups targets by their weight/density . Then yes, hold on to your seat when you start getting fishing sinkers in an eroded zone, because gold is probably not far behind.

2) That you're not on a beach which is perpetually filled with fishing enthusiasts. Because then, duh, OF COURSE there'll be lots of fishing sinkers, and might not have ANY bearing on nearby gold.

As for #2, for example, we have beaches near me where it's rare that you ever see surf fishermen. It's strictly swimmers, surfers, picnics, kids, etc..... So in THOSE cases, if you get sinkers, your ears perk up. But there's other beaches here that are very popular with surf fishermen. On those beaches, we are always finding sinkers. Such that, my ears are not necessarily perking up when I get sinkers. Since, go figure, they were probably lost within the last week.

PS: Love that pix of all the butter !

Partial correct Tom , at least down here. There is a beach here that does get surf fisherman. But way more in swimmers , etc. Doesn't have to be big erosion either. A slight slope works. Any time I get 2 or 3 sinkers , my KOB senses are on high alert. Many of them are suspended , not on the bottom hardpan. This also has to do with the strata. Which tells me they are being thrown up upon the beach , without severe erosion. A few days ago I found many sinkers this way. Along with 5 rings , 1 nice goldy. Most targets were from 8-16" , including coins. But I will also add I dug a ton of iron. When these conditions persist , it is best to have a dig all approach. And it is not for the weak....
