How Many People Coin Roll Hunt?

I search the pennies and the nickels since their edge hasn't changed in a loooong while. I found many old nickels in a person wrapped roll; those are the ones I request. But I work at CVS and have found silver dimes a couple times.....In fact, I once got a 1909 VDB penny back in change from CVS before I worked there!!! But today I found a 1955 nickel in the drawer, 8.3 million minted, and am shocked to have found one.

The other day i got a 1969 dollar star note in my drawer, talk about a surprise! HH

go to the bank with paper money for instance a dollar will get you two 50 cent rolls of pennies.and they look through them looking for Wheaties or 5 dollars for five dollars worth of dimes and hopefully there is older coins in the roll. same as quarters and halves.

Coin Roll Hunting

My fiancee' and I started coin roll hunting a week ago. Here are our finds (as you can see, one roll actually has a franklin on the end!):

7 x Franklins 1951-1963 (90%)
4 x Kennedy 1964 (90%)
10 x Kennedy 1965-1968 (40%)
1 x Rosie 1952 (90%)

Never been a roll hunter but have heard of people doing it.
We used to purchase $10 in rolled dimes every month for about 3 years. That's about $360 total. Found only 3 silvers. Also, we've been purchasing rolled quarters every 2-3 months for the past 11 years for laundry. Not one silver yet.
It may be worth trying for dimes and halves.

AG, how many rolls do you hunt a week?!?! Thats a great haul you got there.

Well, I think the amount that was pictured above was out of 450ish dollars worth of rolls. I'll post more pictures later tonight of our recent haul! (we found our oldest coin last Friday!)

On average I'd say we go through around $400.00+ worth per week.

Here's our most recent finds:
Got $500.00 worth of 1/2 dollars from the bank and the outcome is...

1 x WALKING LIBERTY (1936)
5 x Franklins (90%)
1 x 1964 Kennedy (90%)
17 x 1965-1969 Kennedy (40%)

We go to a local bank (community bank) that orders them from Brinks. They charge members a small fee (7 cents) per roll. We went to a LOT of banks who said they don't stock them and finally found this one who happens to order them in weekly! They also do roll their own but you have better luck with the ones from the rolling company in my opinion since most tellers become coin collectors over time.

thanks for the info ag47. All of the rolls at my local bank are hand rolled. I think someone knows a bit about coins because I have a really hard time finding old coins there! I will try to find a bank that has brinks rolled halves. Can you just go up to any bank and exchange cash for coins or do you have to have an account?

It all depends on the bank I think. Some banks will charge you a fee if you're a non-member; some won't. The place that we've been going charges 7 cents for members and 15 cents for non-members per roll (for any rolled coin, not just halves)

A lot of bigger banks don't have the halves anymore (they send them to their main office and aren't seen again).

Brinks just happens to be the people who bring the rolls to the bank we go to-- I'm not sure who rolls them, they're white and yellow :)

Also another thing to think about is that you probably shouldn't drop off the unrolled coins where you picked them up (because you might continue to get the same coins over and over OR they might get upset with you)

We tend to buy from one bank and then turn them in at our bank.

Thanks again for the advice ag47. I guess I will just have to drive around at some local banks and see what they have. Your finds are amazing and I hope I could find just a bennie one day! How often do you go through rolls and how many do you go through?

Well I finally got around to trying some Half rolls, I should have done it years ago!
Out of $40 I found:
1964 x2
1965 x3
1966 x2
1967 x5
1968 x2
1969 x1

Not bad for my first venture into halves.:D

Usually we try to get $500 a week to go through - we've only been hunting for 2 weeks so far!

Here are our actual totals for hunting (the past 2 weeks):

1 x Walking Liberty (90%)
12 x Franklins (90%)
5 x 1964 Kennedy (90%)
33 x 1965-1969 Kennedy (40%)
------------------------------
Grand total of 51 keepers!

HH!
