How do you people keep your zest for mding

It took about a month before I found my first silver coin (with my new detector). It was pretty rough, kind of like not being able to detect during winter. But after that first silver coin, you feel pretty good. It's an addiction really.

MD'ing and patients goes hand in hand. If you have little patients, like me, then you best be buying a top of the line discriminator. Discrimination was designed to replace patients.

Whats keeps me going is knowing I can look day after day and not find any keepers only to go out the next day and hit the jackpot. Experience has taught me everyone has dry spells and they sometimes seem to last forever, but patients and faith soon have me back in the rainy season.

It took me a lot longer to find my first decent find.

Assuming you have one, was it difficult to get a permit to detect in France, and what process did you have to go through to get one ?

I only ask because this subject has come up on a UK forum.

.

All I know about detecting in france at the moment is that it is nessercary to get permission off the prefecture in the department you wish to detect in
But in France people basically do what they want in the countryside as long as you respect it
The chasse (hunters) can go whereever they like as long as it has no fences or signs saying private they have free rein so i am just presuming that i do too

If i was to find a significant find i would definitly notify the authorities though because i wouldn't want to lose the history and note exactly where when etc... i found it
Maybe even leave it in place for the professionals

I am just doing roadsides my clients gardens and the manmade beaches on the edge of the small lakes round here

My first find was without a detector and it was an hammered cut-half coin i believe it maybe roman

see posts of pictures

If you want a little more instant gratification you could notch out ALL the trash and swing away, looking for coins and such, but you'll be missing out on what I think is pretty important: learning your detector. That and you'll miss some of the good stuff as well.

But if you're close to losing interest in the hobby, then go find some good stuff easily. Just remember to go BACK to those spots after you're good and hooked and you know your gear.

OH

Over $2000.00 in Rings last year, It helps! :)

There are long dry spells, or someone will call and need help finding something they had lost....Year before it wa set of wedding rings that were left in a pair of gloves, shaken out into some leaves, but found it in the bag just before the trash guys got it!

 Then it is just fun and relaxing, great exersize, what other hobby can you do that actually begins to pay you back as soon as a Metal Detector!

Once you accpet the fact that you are probably never going to find a pirate chest full of spanish gold, or a famous outlaw treasure worth millions, you realize that you can still work at it, and over time, build a nice collections of valuable coins, jewelry and relics, and enjoy yourself while doing it. I enjoy all the aspects of hunting, and it's rare that I come home without something interesting, if not especially valuable.

Patience is the key, after all, nothing good comes easy, right?

Holy cow...KCK takes a backhoe with him detecting. Must have one of them there expense ground imagers.

The fact is that 9 out of 10 detectors sold end up in someone's closet. There are many factors that discourage people when they try this hobby.
There's the feeling that you look like a total geek, the worry that you are about to get told off for digging holes in your local park or wherever...

Then of course the frustration factor of digging hundreds of trash targets for every coin, and even more for every silver coin or good ring etc.

Lets face it, you aren't going to get rich or even make a wage detecting.

But...for some of us, the hobby just grabs you and you can't stop looking and thinking about where to look next. Its not so much the finds as the expectation and fun. Add in good friends, good excercise and a bit of clad to pay for the day's coffee....and man...you've got a great hobby! Throw in a few gold rings and old coins and you've got a fantastic one.

Stick with it, its a great and rewarding hobby.

Patience and attitude are big factors. If you can control the ferver of the initial desire to find the mother load and realize that this hobby offers up its treasure in small amounts , you'll start off on the right foot. As far as attitude goes , always go into a hunt with the thought that you're out there having fun , being outdoors and getting some exercise. Then when you find something , it makes it all the more satisfying. Thinking you're going to find the "big one" and you don't , gives you an opposite effect. After 31 years of coin hunting , I never have a dull moment. The search for the treausre is as exciting as the finding of it.

well today after work i done a little detecting for just an hour on the site of an old convent and came up with a (gold) i think...broken locket a (silver ) i think charm/medal and one canteen token and a really nice 1923 2 franc coin my oldest yet and a brass door handle all after about an hour of just browsing around
in the rain freezing my treasures off but i did enjoy it .....back there next week or maybe this weekend i think i am not doing too badly for someone only started about a week ago and with a cheap detector i'll post the pictures in finds forum

Thanks all for the support and advice as well!!

KCK wow what a beutiful lawn mower and attachment
here all the lawn mowers have the ole briggs and stratton engines (American i think!!) I have just a small ride on for the 3/4 of an acre and some other clients (i am a gardener)

Now thats and easy question. every moring i roll over and kiss my MD good morning. i never ask her to do the dishes or the laudry so we have a good relationship. some day i know all the great treatment i give her will pay off ten fold. but for now i will just keep giving her fresh batteries. no really comeing to this forum helps me keep my zest for the hobby seeing all the great finds and the great people makes the winter months that much easier and harded. but ever time i hear the bell ring i know im going to find my cracker jack prize in the bottom of the hole.
