Guys -
Found this on a beach hunt today. I was totally in shock when I was cleaning it as it started cleaning to a nice gold color. Even started doing the dance since I knew it looked very old! :spin::tumble: Then I read COPY and got a little bummed. :( Still, it might be a gold copy... of what? I have placed the pre and post clean pictures of the coin. Thanks for the help!

Don't know what exactly it's a copy of but it's a very cool find.

This past weekend I found something very similar in silver. I found a copy of a 8 reale, (I think). It looks brand new. When my wife gets home fromt the beach with my camera I'll post a pic.

Great find!

Because it didn't come out completely shiny? They do make actual gold copies of these type coins. I don't understand why you're sure its brass?:?:

Gold comes out of the ground well....gold. No discoloration, no corrosion of any
kind. If the soil is dry you could clean it by just blowing the dirt off.

Looks similar to this Phillip II 8 Reale from Lima mint

Well, not always. I've dug 10K items that were VERY tarnished. The gold does not tarnish, but whatever other metal is used does.

Check out my post:

However, if this were the case with the item in question, it wouldn't polish up as easily as it did. Plus, it's hard to imagine someone making a copy of a coin out of real gold and not marking the karat level.

Z that 10 K cross you found is beautiful ( after cleaning ) That is without a doubt the brownest tarnished gold I have ever seen. I was amazed!

I only see 18 K gold used here so I probably won't find it on jewelry, however some of the old Japanese gold coins have a low gold content . These Edo period coins were gold and silver alloys.

Gold content in them covers a wide range varying from 86 percent all the way down to 12 percent.

I am sure the low gold ones would have some interesting coloration. Not that I'll ever find any:lol:

I just had one of my school's science teachers test the coin with a streak stone :?: and she said it's defintely got some type of gold - either plated or real. Off to a jeweler for a more thorough test. I'm crossing my fingers!

Seems to me that's a copy made for a kid's treasure island play park (or however you'd say that). We have a member on our site that had found one, and he did some research on it and found out all about it, but I can't find the post, so I don't know exactly what he had found out.
Here's the one he found:
