almost looks like a broken gear part or counter weight ,is it made of iron ?

Yeah, it definitely looks like part of a gear sprocket.... marcus, where are you finding all this old hard to ID stuff, you've had quite a few finds needed to be ID'd?

thanks for the responses. most of my finds come from an old stone foundation that i found in the woods near a small village est. in early 1700s. here is a photo of my finds today.

ive also found a rev. war period french colonial navy button a few months ago next to the well behind this foundation.
