Found a chunck with a number

i found this at a house that dates back to the late 1700's and has been lived in the whole time.

Any ideas?

Oh, and I know the round thing is a form of currency. It's the other thing that has me puzzled. :spin:
 
Very much looks like it bolted on to something, or was a tag maybe... dunno... even my Google Ninja skills are stumped on that one.
 
Is it.......

heavy or fairly light for its size? Does it mark paper like a pencil? The size and shape look like a brush out of an electric moter, or an automotive generator.

If the front of it (side away from the hole) is concave then it is an electric motor brush. If it's lead, it's most likely a weight for a cloth throwover.
 
It does look like an ID tag.. usually adhered with a thin wire twist.... they used to come on pieces of equipment... pumps etc... RickO
